I'd like to pick up a 10/22 soon. I'm pretty big on customizing things although I like simplicity as well. I'm thinking starting with a Hogue OM stock and whatever cheap bull barrel I can find.

Just seems a shame to start with a new 10/22 when you plan to replace the stock and barrel anyways.

What would be the best course of action for someone wanting to start with that kind of 10/22 setup? What parts are not included in what would commonly be referred to as the "action"? I'm not so familiar with the 10/22 parlance so I don't really know if the "action" includes everything NOT barrel and stock.

At the very least, Green Mountain barrel of whatever configuration you like and a reworked or aftermarket hammer.

The hogue stock is a good choice.

When people refer to the "ActioN" they are usually refering to the trigger group and the bolt. There are several places you can send just your trigger group and they will send it back ready to go. They range in price from about $50 up to $100. Start poking around on RFC you will be amazed at how many differant options there are for 10/22s. It can be addicting so watch out I own three 10/22s now and plan on getting one built out in .17 in the near future.

If you're going to be going all out customizing the rifle, why not just get a Volquartsen Custom. I picked up the Volquartsen Deluxe about a month ago. I love it. I was out shooting last weekend with a couple of guys who had the customized 10/22, and I was shooting circles around them. We were shooting shotgun hulls at between 75 to 100 yards.

The recievers in the volquartsens are forged stainless, where as the rugers are cast. And they already come with all the bells and whistles that you'll want to be swapping out, such as the oversize magazine release, recoil buffer, one sweet trigger, bolt release mechanism, etc... The weaver scope mount is already milled into reciever.

If you can drop all the cash at once, I would highly recommend getting the Volquartsen.

just my 0.02 cents worth.

FWIW, I'm may be in the market for a new Ruger 18.5" blued factory barrel with factory sights soon. Need to replace the barrel on a 10/22 International (Mannlicher-style stock), don't ask why ... it involves Red Loctite and a front sight ... :eek: :banghead:

You can pretty reliably get a take off blued 10/22 barrel used for about 15-23 bucks shipped. everyone upgrades them.

the ones to really keep a look out for are the longer factory ones.

Mr. Dove;

Considering that you can find Hogue overmolded stocks for just under $40.00 these day, don't be too quick to buy that bull barrel. Try the Hogue standard channel stock & the barrel that came with the gun first. Many stock 10/22 barrels are capable of excellent accuracy with nothing more than careful ammo selection. Of course, that means going to the range & doing the work, but that's what guns are for, right? To shoot!

A good selection of ammo for your test should be from at least 5 different manufacturer's & then 4 or 5 different types of ammo from each maker. You don't need to get any of the ultra-dollar stuff, but don't shy away from paying a couple of dollars more for a box of 50 either.

You may not be able to obtain Winchester Powerpoints at this time. Later this year, that should change. I've had very good luck with this particular ammo in more than one gun.
