10-22 question

When I was in the Army (late '80's) I bought a very used 10/22 from a friend for $75 in beer money... it is an early 5-digit 'Hanen Sportsman' (as stamped on the barrel.) The barrel was pitted, but that didn't seem to affect accuracy, it was a tack driver. Back then, I had good eyes, and I found the factory sights some of the best I've ever seen on a .22, at least for open sights.

About 10 years ago, I bought a takeoff stock, cut 1.5" off it, and added some TechSights... and gave it to my daughter to learn to shoot, so it continues on...

My only complaint with the 10/22 is the rotary mag... those things give me fits like nothing else. I've even 'tuned' them up and they still hang.

You might try and “upgrade it” with cheap aftermarket parts and mags, seems to be the most effective way to make them choke.
Lol...maybe that's why they've both run well.

One's completely stock and on the other while it has a Bell and Carlson Anshutz stock, a Green Mountain bull barrel and a Nikon scope with a Weaver mount and Burris rings the trigger, bolt and everything related the the actual moving parts is also stock.

Here was the thread from 2007.

I also only use Ruger mags. Some of them are the Ruger BX-25 mags in addition to the regular 10 rd Ruger mags, but there's nothing cheap on that rifle at all.

I like my ruger stainless 10-22 with black synthetic stock its still factory and is the 50th anniversary edition and I use it quit often along with my henry hoo1 22 leveraction and these I love both of them and still taking squirrels with them!

I've got a 1973 10-22 handed down from my father who used it for shooting muskrats that were tunneling under his lawn from pond. It's been well taken care of but not shot in 30 years. I'm going to have to take it out and shoot it now after reading this thread.View attachment 770471

Nice looking rifle, but after shooting it for a bit, you may want to replace the scope with one that has a 1" tube and decent optics. There's not much field of view or brightness to those old scopes.

Looks like you have the adapter for weaver mounts, but it may only be for tip-off mounts. If you get a 1" scoop, you'll need both mounts and probably a Weaver Detachable Mount base.

Never owned a 10-22. Always thought about it but have been happy with my Marlins. Well thanks to this thread now I'm thinking again...

I like my Marlin Model 60s as well- esp since they both have the longer "assault rifle" magazine tubes and also because one belonged to my Dad and the other was my first rifle. But I also like my 10-22 a lot- and the thing that gets me more than anything is on the inside. 10-22 are so incredibly simple in form and function and the Model 60s are a mad contraption of springs and levers. No doubt because of the magazine differences, but the simplicity of the 10-22 is something to be admired. I remember the first time I disassembled a 10-22, I was anticipating a similar contraption lurking inside but once apart I had a, "this is all there is to it?!" moment of surprise.

I have one about 30 years old. Very accurate from the start. I upgraded the stock and barrel years ago. Shoots great but no quite as well as my CZ 452. In a match a guy nearly beat me with a stock 10/22. Some shoot very well stock. I did have to take it apart and clean it thoroughly once as it was not feeding well. That took care of it.
