I have a ruger 10/22 target tactical with a Nikon prostaff bdc scope on it, that I have been thinking about replacing the stock on.

Not that there is anything wrong with the Hogue, but I would like to have something nicer but I am having a tough time getting information. Can anyone tell me the benefit of having a thumbhole stock over a sporter stock? And of course if you have a stock that has worked well for you please name it, I am looking for ideas here (post pics if you got them:D).

This is really just a plinking rifle for me, I don't have any requirements for what kind of stock other than I'm looking for a wood one.

Thanks,

As far as stock go, the Hogue is actually a very good one. Thumbhole are totally a comfort thing, some people like them while others dont (I dont). Otherwise, just find a nice older walnut take off.

Given a choice I'd take the Hogue 10:1 over a laminated thumbhole stock.

If you choose a thumb hole stock you're likely to need new rings for starters. If you're not one for carry slings, a thumb hole is not for you. The traditional benefits of a thumb hole are comfort and a lower bore axis for recoil control which is, in the case of a rimfire, of no benefit. Comfort is subjective, I find them beneficial for some rifles but a 10/22 is not one of them.

what about something along the lines of a boyds tacticool or a bell & Carlson target/varmint? I could stand to have something with a slightly higher comb on it than the Hogue, it's not uncomfortable to maintain a cheek weld but it does require a little more conscious effort than I would like.

Nope. Save some money, point your browser to Brownells and find a product called Scope Eze. Figure out which height you need and order. Like your Hogue stock, it's rather underwhelming but incredibly functional. I like good looking stuff too but I really like dragging out an underdog and turning people's heads.

^^^^ this. I've seen these for ~ 80 bucks but you have to finish them.

Don't have one myself but I will.

you can get them already finished in black textured paint for 100 bucks, I don't think I'd mind finishing one as long as I could decide what I'd want to do with it.

i sprayed mine with a flat tan paint because i was going to another appleseed the next day and was impatient. Ill prob sand and re paint it then do a hard clear on it.
