Yes I know this subject has been brought up, but I am new and am wondering if I could get further info on this gun from owners. This will be my first gun, and will be putting some money into it, and lots of thought.

Let me preface this response with the fact that I have never fired or owned a 100 ATR. I may get some "hate mail" for this response, but I am not a huge fan of the 100 ATR. I felt that the build quality and accuracy potential was not up to par with some of the other guns in it's class. IN MY OPINION, the Stevens model 200 and the Marlin Xl7 are a better value for just about $30 more. I bought both my Stevens 200 (.223) and my Marlin XL7 (.25-06) for $279. Both of these guns will not win a beauty contest, but they are super accurate and super reliable. If you are set on an ATR, I will not sway you- but I want you to be aware of other options. The ATR, I have heard, is a good gun, but like I said, I have my personal biases. Just my thoughts.....

Didn't these have an issue with the bolt having something happen and people getting injured? That's enough to stray me away from them. Or was that something else from Mossberg?

I've also never fired or owned a 100 ATR but from seeing them while they seemed better than the Remington 770 or similar I would pick up a Savage Model 10, Stevens 200, or Marlin XL-7 over the 100 ATR as they all seem a lot nicer for not all that much more.

I own an Mossberg 100 ATR. It's a 270 Winchester and it was my first centerfire rifle. I got it from Wal-Mart and, at the time of purchase, the price was the selling feature. I also own a Remington 308, a Stevens 25-06, and a Savage 243. The Mossberg holds its own against these rifles.

At first, I couldn't get it to group, but as I learned how to shoot, I found that the grouping problem wasn't with the rifle, it was with me. Once I learned how to squeeze the trigger and be surprised when the rifle went off, I found the rifle was extremely accurate and fun to shoot.

I handload and, with a load I found on the Hodgdon site, I can shoot a 1-inch 5-shot group. The rifle "fits" me well, I have no problem with the action, and it's got enough heft that it helps with recoil, but at the same time, it doesn't weigh you down in the field.

I've been pleased with this rifle and would have no problem recommending it to others.
