Okay, here is the situation: A tornado has completely destroyed your house, you and your family have barely made it out alive. A local church is providing you with clothes, food and water. You have a small RV/tent to live in. The insurance company is overwhelmed and admits it may take several weeks (maybe even months) to get you a check. The local church has also given you a hundred dollar bill, all your needs are taken care of except defense. What do you buy?

Here are the rules, you have only $100 that's it so you can't buy a gun that is 99.00 + tax. You find ONE box of good ammo in the rubble that was once your home. This ammo can be ammo you have, or ammo you would want for the gun you choose. It can be anything but there is only ONE box of it. SO if you choose a good JHP then you are limited to whatever comes in the box like a box of hornady critical defense comes in 20 so you only have 20.

I know what I would choose but I am going to wait till I see what others have to say and what they would get.

EDIT TO ADD: MODS this is not a SHTF scenario, it is a very real possibility for some who live in tornado high risk areas.

Sounds like a SHTF scenario to me.

But disregarding all that.

I wouldn't need to buy a gun if I lived through it, because I would have had one on me from the get-go.

Along with a flashlight, cell phone, and a few other things when I went to the basement.

If your town is destroyed by a tornado there is pretty small probability you aren't going to find a lot of guns for sale. Buy a bus ticket and get out of town.

For 100 even all you could moslt likely find is Mosin (which I would get) a used shot gun or highpoint pistol. The days for 99 dollar out the door SKSs are gone.

Bingo.

Whichever handgun I had carried that day would have slept beside me, and I would have grabbed it on the way out.

I'll take a free rock and bash in the heads of all the people with $100 bills, and then buy a gold tiger-striped Deagle with sights mounted to the right side of the slide and a laaaaaaazor.

Or maybe I evac with a gun on my hip, and there's a folding PCC and/or takedown .22 rifle handy on the way out the door most of the time, too (obviously, those aren't ready to go when they're doing range duty, unless they're packed up waiting to go to the range).

Or if your situation is genuine and to be taken at face value, I band together with the other nearby evacuees and establish a neighborhood watch, or at least a mutual aid agreement.

My definition of SHTF is total society melt down. King of like Orleans after the cane
Ever been in a tornado ravaged city?
I thought not.
It is Katrina, only on a smaller scale.

BTDT, two times.

And if Greensburg KS is any indication?

The local police and national guard went around and confiscated all the firearms found in the rubble or in possession of the survivors.

No luck with this idea! After tornadoes police close the area off to everyone even private security or residents. Once police are sure that there are no live wires, leaking gasses or any hazards are present - LEO set up a way to identify residents. To simplify describing the process the police turn the area into a gated community. No one in - no one out, without proper credentials.

A bit too SHTF, I agree... I'd spend that hundred bucks on a trip to my out of state relatives'. :D And I already would have access to lots of guns. And an uncle who would loan us some. And a friend who has over a hundred...

Now, if you are SERIOUSLY asking, home defense for $100- NEF/H&R 12 gauge. Or a Mosin. Spend a bit more, and get an H&R Pardner Pump/Maverick 88/Norinco 981/982 pump. Hi-Point Carbine for $275. Hi-Point Pistols? After my father owning 2 (! not just a HP basher-personal experience) I wouldn't trust one with my life.

this was supposed to get you thinking this question "if I had only 100 bucks, could I defend my family" The scenerio I gave was just a generic one that popped into my head. SO for all those who don't like the scenario, could you defend your family for 100 bucks?

You dont really need the huge bold letters. It really makes me not want to even read this thread anymore. KK bye

I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT!!!

Seriously, for $100... I would buy a used H&R 9 shot .22lr revolver.

I don't feel that's satisfactory, but it's also unlikely I would ever be forced to defend myself on a $100 budget.

I'm trying to imagine a realistic scenario where I've lost my home, my livelihood, all my savings, all my possessions save a tent and a box of ammo, but somehow all my other needs are taken care of for an indefinite amount of time by some organization who decides my most pressing need is to go buy a gun with the last $100 they give me.

Can someone else help me come up with a realistic scenario where you're down to your last $100 but all your other needs are taken care of and you REALLY need to buy a gun RIGHT NOW? I'll leave the thread open for a bit to see if anyone has any plausible scenarios where this would happen rather than it being just an elaborate set up for, "Can you buy a gun for $100?"

Edited: Actually, the OP has requested this thread be closed because no one wanted to play his game. Request granted.

SO for all those who don't like the scenario, could you defend your family for 100 bucks?
Sure. Probably use it to get to a location of more stability/securty. I don't think I'd be traipsing around town trying to buy a gun with it. I'd be looking to get out, and stay out of harm's way, like always.

Having to use a gun is the FAILURE of a good defense. :)
