A shift in .22lr production?

Some shooters like cheap ammo and cheap beer, the cheaper the better.

Some (like me) prefer premium ammo and premium microbrews, the quality/taste trumps price.

Honestly at this point, I buy any and all .22 ammo available ANYWHERE I can find it, for frankly pretty much any price. Short, longs, LR, I've even got about 300 rds of .22 magnum stocked up now even though I don't own a gun that chambers it. I've been thinking of getting either a Kel-Tec PMR-30 or an NAA in .22 mag.

It's just so rare these days to find ANY .22 ammo on the shelf, and I own numerous .22 arms. While the prices today might be more expensive than they used to for .22 rimfire, it's still cheaper than the outrageously expensive cost of centerfire pistol ammo. A box of .45 ACP these days cost what, $25 and up? I can easily go through 4 boxes of 50 rounds in one range session, that's $100 on up that I just blew for maybe an hour of fun. I simply do not have that kind of money, and the cheaper .22 rimfire gives me much more "play time" even if it's not so cheap these days. JMHO.

YMMV.

Not to point fingers, but this is the exact mindset that keeps supplies from recovering....people buying it because its there, not because they actually NEED it, not because they are out, but simply because they feel if they don't buy it now, they may never be able to. As long as that mindset continues to run wild, there won't be anything resembling "normal" supplies on .22 ammo in any store. The idea that if its there, it MUST be bought, regardless of price, only feeds the panic mentality. When people are buying rimfire ammo for guns they don't even own, simply because it happens to be on the shelf, we stand little chance of any sort of "recovery" any time soon, at least IMHO. That sort of behavior, to me, seems just silly, and only further contributes to the issues we are presently having in regards to ammo.

I am starting to see .22lr available, BUT it does seem to be only match loads whenever I see it. Prices are between .26-.30 per round.

I've found it is self regulating.

There may not ever be too much ammo, but there really is a enough ammo...usually dictated by available storage space and the patience of other family members ;)

I've found that most folks usually calm down at about 5k rounds and then it becomes just a maintenance thing. Folks who plan ahead, usually have 7-10k rounds on hand to weather dips in supply

During the last couple of years, I've been stocking up on .22 Mag a bit as I have both a rifle and revolver that shoot it. :)

I'm glad I did. The LGS where I found Win. 555 bulk .22LR (36 gr. HPs) for $29.99 last summer and Rem. T'bolts (40 gr. LRN) 500 rd. brick for $27.99 last month also has Rem. .22 Mag Accu-tip (33 gr) in boxes of 50 for $21.99 !! :barf:

Last summer, they were going for about $12-14 !!

I'm sitting on about 600 rds of 22 . That was hard enough to get around these parts..

I don't see the OP's description as indicative of what they are or are not producing but rather what was left on the shelf at the time of his visit.

Doubtless the cheap stuff was already gone.

Gas station only having premium doesn't mean that that is all the refiners are producing more likely, the station is currently outa regular due to demand.

For my part, I don't see too much wrong with the numbers... price beef, milk etc these days. The whining about "gouging" gets so old.

The premium target ammunition certainly has a reduced market. Folks that just plink seldom buy it except in an emergency like family visiting tomorrow.... always shoot when they are here.... no ammo, better go buy at least some of this stuff.

For me, I get calm at about 10K rounds or two cases; one standard velocity like CCI and the other my favorite plinking fodder, Federal Champion/Lightning (510's/510B's).
