Yes i know the more money, the better, for a rifle scope! However i am "only looking at the $100.- range". The two top scopes in the Field & Stream test for this price range were the Weaver 40/44 and the Bushnell Banner (Day/Night). Both scope were 3x9 40mm. Any info on these two scopes or any other scope (remember ben franklin's only) would be of great help!!:banghead: The scope is for a Marlin XL7 in 30-06.

Natchezss shows they still have the discontinued Bushnell Legend 3-9X40 for $90.
The Legend was two steps up from the Banner.

If you're limited to $100, I'd look for a fixed power scope. You'll end up with better glass than a variable power of the same price.

Weaver 40/44's are a pretty solid mid priced scope. Made in the Phillipines which is a large step above Chinese scopes.

Never used a fixed power scope, are there any limitations, mostly plan on long range plinking in the desert.

I have used an older Weaver T-10, a fixed ten power, on my main varmint rifle for many years now. The rifle is a 22 CHeetah built on a Remington 700 action and has killed over 1500 coyotes and unknown numbers of whistle pigs and small varmints. I would agree you will bet better glass going with a fixed power over a variable in the price range you are looking at.

A good $100 4x32 fixed power scope sounds like a way to go, but the only one I can think of is the old-model Nikon Prostaff. I'd rather have the Bushnell Legend.
Fixed power scopes are few and far between these days.

Agreed. I've got a 10x Weaver on my prairie dog gun, and it works very well for what I need. IIRC, the scope cost around $120 or so a few years back.

Im not any kind of optics anything but BassPro has a RedHead 4x32 scope for 49.00, or at least thats what i paid for them, i bought 2 of them to be put on Marlin 795 .22s im giving as Christmas gifts....also eabco.com has som variable power scopes in their "garage sale" section that look to be a good deal. again, im no optics expert.

The vortex crossfire is good....have two. Also look at the simmons white tail classic's on midways site... Those should be Phillipine glass and do well.

+1 on swfa.com

For a C note you can do fairly well on eBay. But that sale Vortex is mighty tempting. Vortex has a god reputation.

Now, if you don't mind a bit of extra weight (a few ounces) and you toss away the steel rings that it comes with - the CenterPoints 4~16x40 have been holding up real well. Couple of fellows here have them on 30-06's and one we have been testing on a hot-load 45-70 shootin pigs is holding up fine. They are rated up to 416 Rigby, and if it breaks take it back to Wally World and either get another or your money back? Hard to go wrong for a cheapie to fill in until you have more dough :)
