1000 Dollars of Guns!

With 1,000 to spend

I took this as if I had to get rid of some to total $1000

Depending on the purpose:

1) Rifle (Some may prefer a shotgun..there are alot of good ones out there cheap)
$400-500 Ruger Mini-14 (w/ a 5rd and two additional 20 or 30rd mags) ** I don't own one of these but am considering selling an AK for the purchase...

2) CCW
$309-335 CCW Taurus Millenium Pro (12+1 rd capacitay)

3) Pocket Pistol
$250-300 Ruger LCP pocket pistol. (small 4 down here in the subtropical climates)

OK, before I answer this in the spirit it was intended, I did just purchase my first gun... and starting from nothing its amazing how much the prices add up:

Gun handling training: $200
State certificate: $25
RIA 1911: $499
State fee: $25
Tax: $50
Gun Safe: $200
1000 Rounds Ammo: $350
Holster: $75
2 spare magazines: $50
Cleaning kit and supplies: $25
Eyes and Ears: $50

That's over $1500 for my first gun, and its not even a high-end gun.

OK, now that I've said that... No taxes, no accessories, no ammo, how would I start?

Now that I have a HD gun, next in line is a .22lr for range shooting and getting friends shooting, then something chambered in 9mm for a #2 pistol, and then a shotgun. That's how I plan to start, but to get this in under $1000 let's combine the primary and secondary pistols into one good one. Say a CZ 75B for $525. And a Mossberg 500 for $275. And $300 for a Browning Buckmark. That's $1100.

Hmmmmmm, not sure I can make a good "collection" for under $1000. :D

You could shave off a few dollars(50-75) by getting a less expensive shotgun, such as the maverick, or getting the mossberg used. Another $25 by getting a 22/45 instead of the buckmark, or getting the buckmark used. That puts it at just the budget limit.

$1000 goes a long way as far as utility goes, especially after Christmas when so many people start getting their credit card bills. I am talking about good mechanical condition not necessarily pretty.

Used Marlin 60 (Local) $ 75 -
Used Mossy 500 $ 125 - 150
Used Ruger Mk II $ 200 - 225
Used Marlin 336 30-30 $ 150 - 250
Used Charter arms .38spcl $ 175 - 200
$ 725

Ruger SP-101 .357 - I saw one used the other day for $309.
Marlin 336 30-30 - They are available here for around $200 for an obviously used but functional rifle.
I'd look for a good .22. Marlin or Savage bolt action, 10/22, or Marlin model 60 or a used CZ if I could find one. I know where there is a CZ-452 for $150 right now.

That's about $700 after taxes.
I'd get a good holster for the SP-101, which would be about $60 for one from Simply Rugged.
I'd spend the remaining $240 on ammo and add more as I could afford it.

Mosin Nagant 91/30 - $100
Used 12 gage pump action - $150
Used Ruger GP100 .357 - $250
Used Ruger 10-22 - $150
New Stoeger Cougar 9mm - $350

The opening post didn't specify buying ammo...

If I had to buy ammo too, then I'd buy the best used Marlin 336C 30-30 I could find for $200. Then I'd buy the best .22 rifle I could for $200. And, then I'd spend $150 on the best used 12 gage I could find. Then I'd buy as much ammo as possible with the remaining $450. I'd spent $100 on 30-30, $100 on 12 gage and $250 on .22LR.

3 guns only for under a $1000

Used Glock compact 23/19/32 in that order $400

Used Remington 870 $175

New Wally World Savage in 223 with scope $369

Tac Star- 3 shot Mag-extension $42

cheap butt cuff for ammo for the shotgun $14

Total $1000

870 for home defense and hunting

Glock compact everyday cqarry and home defense

Savage in 223 hunting/varmints/target/ long range defense

Mossberg Maverick 88 $187
Mossberg 30-06 or .270 $249
Kel Tec P11 $250
A .22 Rifle of some sort (dont know what they run now sice I have had two for forever)

Spend the rest on ammo. Save for a black evil gun.....

CZ P-01 $525
+2 Mec-Gar magazines $20x2=$40
IWB holster = $80
Streamlight TLR-1 weaponlight = $95

If I ever need to use a gun in an emergency, it would probably probably be a handgun, and it would probably be in the dark. I'm also very particular to the CZ-75 family of pistols.

You must be a very lucky man.
The cheapest I've ever seen a used GP-100 was $359 plus tax. :(

FWIW, I'd put a lot of emphasis on a good concealable handgun.
It's the gun that you're able to carry with you for defense so it's the most likely to be used for defense. It's easy to stick a mid-sized handgun in your waistband/belt to go investigate noises or late-night knocks on the door.
You need not necessarily spend a lot - $200 for a Makarov or $300 for a SIG P6 or $259 for a used Ruger P-95 should be fine.
Some would argue that a rifle or shotgun is more important but I don't agree with that. They don't do you a bit of good when you're getting shot and they're safe at home, locked in a safe or closet.

Make the handgun the priority.
Get a holster, ammo, CCW permit, replacement grips, etc.
After you're squared away there, spend some money on something to add to your collection.

Just my $.02.

-Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 for about $200.

-Marlin 25n used, maybe for $25 like I found the one. If not that cheap, for $75 like I found the other.

-Remington 700 .308, .30-06, 7mm rem mag, .270, or a caliber like those, used for $400.

-Yugo SKS for what ever they are up to now.

If I had to do it again I would go with
S&W Mod 10 ~$150-200
Mossberg 500 ~$150
Marlin mod 60 ~$100-125
M1 Garand from CMP ~$600

yup

6 Mosins Nagants $600 ( high end )
4 sealed tins 7.62x54r $400 shipped ( high end )

that is enough rifles and 1,600 rds to pass around to your friends

a used pump 12 guage $150
a used 22 rifle $100
a used 5906/P89 $275
a used lever 30/30 or 44mag $300
a used kel-tec 32/380 $175

You must be a very lucky man.

Goon, you're probably right. So, I'd probably delete the Mosin and the Ruger GP100 and use the $350 to buy a Savage .308.

Which would give me a good rifle (Savage), a 12 gage, a semi-auto .22 rifle and a Stoeger Cougar in 9mm.

My turn...

1. SKS (Any type, but I like the Norinco's) + (Some) Ammo = 475

2. Ruger 10/22 + (Some) Ammo = 200

3. Mossberg 500 Combo + (Some) Ammo = 325

That's What I would Buy with 1000.00. If you are awarding 1000.00 to the best answer, I'll take the cash in small bills, THANKS! :D

I kind of just did this exact thing!

Beretta 92FS 9MM with a bunch of factory and aftermarket mags-$400
Astra A-75 almost new, with extra mag and holster- $310
Dan Wesson 44 mag, 6" blued-$400

Well, I was close!
