I Am lucky enough to be able to do my takes online this year "efile" ..So in 3 weeks I will have my tax return and I want to buy something to put my guns in to keep them safe.I have searched the forums for everything to do with safes in the title and am going to ask a few more questions..

I have came to the conclusion that I want something better then a Sentry safe.But my taxes return isn't going to be over $1000.Any suggestions are welcome..The only local safes that I have seen are Liberty safes "In Oregon ..They did have a centurion safe http://www.libertysafe.com/Safe_Centurion23.lasso It was big for what I need but everyone says buy big..It cost 1000 dollars but IM not sure if its much better then a sentry safe...Any suggestions are welcome.

Also would it be a good idea to buy a 10 gun sentry safe and put it next to the big safe that I get ..and just store ammo in it.And hope is somebody breaks in they will waste some time going after the smaller safe?

Ps I know some people dont consider what I need a safe :)

You can buy a decent firearms storage container (some folks get WAY too pedantic when you use the word "safe") for $500 or so... You basically wanna make sure the toddlers and neighborhood juveniles don't get into it, right? Bass Pro has some _nice_ ones around the $700 mark...

I had a $1k Liberty safe for 5 years, and it was great. Only weighed 600 pounds so you have to bolt it down, but it was a good safe.

I bought a Liberty safe about 3 years ago, an extremely good investment IMHO. I paid about $800 for mine, so yes you can get a good safe for less than $1,000.

When a question comes up about how big a safe one should get, I answer that with another question:

Do you have any empty closets?

It seems that no matter how much closet space anyone has, it's always full.

I have only one complaint about my Liberty safe, I guess I'm going to have to buy another one, I'm running out of space! :eek:

Im new here - anyway

I was just checking into getting another liberty safe. The prices have gone through the roof. Apparently all the steal is being brought up in china. The one that I brought 4 years ago I paid 1400 and now its 2100. (that’s with delivery)

My advice is by the biggest safe you can afford to get. The one I brought is big. 900lbs empty. And it’s full and I need another one.

It was possible a few years ago to get a nice Liberty for under $1000.

Sams and Costco are selling some fairly nice safes for a decent price too.

What ever you do, make sure you buy the safe with delivery from the seller. I have used moving people to move mine once and it was not a good idea.

Also, if cosmetics are not a big concern, you might see if they have any with paint damage. My local dealer here is the biggest Liberty dealer, and they have some that are priced lower by $150-400 depending on condition. HTH

Also, the advice about having the dealer deliver is correct. It's usually NOT worth it to try yourself, particularly if multiple floors or tight areas are involved.

I got a Cannon Safe from Atwoods Hardware for $699 about three years ago.

They also carry Liberty safes for around the same price.

The local Sam's Club has a big green Winchester safe for $699 right now.

You may find ads for Sportsman Steel safes out there. I tried to buy one, but didn't because of the rude wacko on the other end of the phone.

He tried to sell me on the locking feature and warranty of the safe by saying, "Well, let's say you come drunk one night, and really beat the hell outta your safe trying to open it, and ya break the lock all to hell....we'll fix that damage for free under our warranty."

When I asked about Safe Model X advertised on their website for Y dollars, he yelled at me, "You CAN'T BUY one of OUR safes for Y dollars!!!!"

I said, well, that's what's advertised on your website and hung up on the wacko.

If you search around, you will find similar stories on the Internet about the rude wackos at Sportsman Steel.

Chetrogers;

I'm the pendantic one. Since this seems to bother some, I'll try to keep it short.

One: Nothing in your price range is going to be a true safe. Therefore, get the least expensive you can with the capacity you need. The protective level differences are marginal.

Two: Do a search of RSC, or Residential Security Container. When you're done, at least you'll know what you're getting & what the differences are between an RSC & a safe.

The local Tractor Supply Company has a nice gun safe for around $700. Don't remember the manufacturer but it appears to be well built and is high temp rated.

My father-in-law just bought a 6' by 8' steel storm shelter and, looking at it, I realized that I could build one as a walk-in gun safe for a couple thousand bucks out of "C"-channel and 3/8" steel plate. It will fasten to the concrete slab in my shop building with 1/2" tapcon bolts and weigh enough that BGs can't move it with anything short of a crane. Triple deadbolts and concealed hinges would provide a secure door and I can tie it into my security system. Fire protection isn't an issue where I'll locate it but tornados are.

I'd recommend buying one much larger than you'll think you'll ever need..... mine will hold 24 long guns (theoretically) and I have room enough for one maybe two more long guns.....

Another recommendation would be not to let your wife look into it when you've got all your firearms in it..... too many questions to answer if you do.... :D

Nobody ever mentions how much these places charge for delivery and installation. Can't imagine it's cheap. They charge by the pound?

Ryder;

I sell safes. Our shop's policy has always been this; garage to garage is included in the price within the city. If there are ANY elevation changes, even a half-step, we inspect & charge by the job. A basement delivery will typically run about $400.00.

However, since we sell safes, not Liberty's, Browning's, Cannon's etc., our's weigh a great deal more than the above mentioned RSC's. Our minimum weight for a long gun safe is about 1100 lbs. A lot of things influence the cost of delivery. Such as, crossing deep shag carpet, ceramic tile, tight corners, corners on staircases, low overheads, and, of course, 'help' from the homeowner.

Thank You CB900F

Appreciate the ballpark info. That's certainly not chicken feed!

I am on the verge of getting a new safe also. I have room for a 6041. Nearest place I am going to be able to purchase one (at a reasonable price) is around 60 miles. Think I am going to try install this myself.

I can back a pickup right up to the sliding door in the room it's to be installed in. The sill of this door is three steps high. Shouldn't be much of a drop to the room floor. Once inside it just needs to slide 8-10 feet straight back into it's corner. I should have 4 people to help one of whom is in the moving industry.

I'm replacing the carpet in this room soon. Was thinking I'll rip the carpet out and sprinkle sand on the linoleum so it slides easier. Or would it slide easy enough on carpet as long as it isn't deep?

I just got my new save.. It was a heritage safe comapany 40wX28dX70h I think it hold 46 or 60 guns depends on how You set up the inside. I saw some 26 gun safes for $700. I know you can save money by going with a Marble or stone finish. They charge more for gloss finish. But some of the smaller 8 or 10 gun safes cost more than I paid for mine, same fire rateing.I paid $1500 for my safe. IF you live in the southeast Benton shooters supply is a great place to buy a safe.

Ryder;

Why slide it? Jeez, that sounds like work! Get 4 each, 1/4" dia X 30" long mild steel dowel rods. Roll it. If you don't want to rip up the carpet, buy a 3/4" sheet of plywood with one clean side. Have it sawed in two 2' X 8' sections & lay them on the carpet & then roll.

chetrogers, my safe was made by liberty but has a generic name on it, with a key pad lock it cost about $720+50 for delivery of 50+ miles.

Also, as to bringing it in to the house, the TWO guys used 4 ,2-3 foot sections of PVC pipe to role it in. NO offence to the previous post but steel dowel rods? Uh...this safe will have some type of finish applied right? Just a thought. Good luck in your search!

The only local safes that I have seen are Liberty safes "In Oregon ..They did have a centurion safe
It was big for what I need but everyone says buy big..It cost 1000 dollars

I bought one of these (a Centurion) just before Christmas - was a great deal less than $1000. Was more like $630. The Timber Ridge safes made by Liberty are also sold by Gander Mountain and you can buy one for far less than $1000.

Also , I picked mine up at the store - having one delivered can add quite a bit to the price.
