I want something that is functional to 1000 yards. By functional i mean that it wont always see 1000 yards but will be used in the 5-800 yard range mostly but i will occasionally stretch her legs. I want something in a heavy caliber (Think .338 edge/lapua) for around 3000$ minus the optics. Im leaning to the GA precison or defensive edge rifles. I know these calibers are overkill but i already have a 7 mag, 30-06, .308, .223, and soon to be 6mm br. I need a heavy long range gun.
I was also considering having a custom gun built around a surgeon action.

I reload so ammo cost isnt a terrible concern.

Advice?

target and hunting. i wont be doing any match shooting but i still want match accuracy or as much as i can get without being afraid to take this thing out and use it.

Yes i have considered the savages. I know the actions are really good but every other off the shelf savage i have felt as of late feels cheap. This rifle will be like the "crown jewel" out of my collection of springfields, brownings, rock rivers, colts, and remingtons.

I dont mind paying a lot for a rifle but i only want to do it once.

Nice rifle ussr!

The cheap feeling comes from the crappy stocks the base rifles come with. The one with the HS stock would feel good. I've got one of these http://www.xlrindustries.com/ on my savage now. Not something I'd use on a hunting rifle though it's pretty dang heavy.

Yeah, the long range hunter and other upper end Savages have a much better stock that gets rid of the cheap feeling. That is what I would go with.

Long ago (1961-1963) I was on the USMC rifle team (pistol alternate) out of the DC area.

Shot lots of 800 to 1,000 yard targets with a Garand, iron sights. Gather a decent pile of 14k medals in the '62 - '63 years.

Yes, it was massaged by the guys in the trailer, the trigger checked daily for a 4.0 lb. miminum.

The 'secret' to long range shooting is really the shooter. No smoking, no coffee, no tea, so regular sodas. Work on being flexible. Work on your shooting positions. Worked at least one hour a day on off-hand position. Properly place the butt on your shoulder pad, grip it correctly, drop your left hand and arm (right hand shooter), hold the position for one minute. Support the gun, sit down on a small stool to allow your muscles to relax for one minute. Repeat this for one hour.

Yeah, it is tough, for me not having coffee was a problem. But, round after round in the 'V' ring is a great reward.

Wow...so one cup of coffee would send the bullet flying away? Everything really does get amplified at that distance, huh?

I'll tell you what mine's gonna be hopefully within 3-4 months:

30-06
Model 70 SS Action
Schneider or Douglas Barrel, Haven't made my mind up yet
McMillan A4 or A5 stock, have't decided yet but know I want the buttstock hook
Probably will end up with an aftermarket trigger eventually, the MOA I have now is fine for now for me.
20 MOA picatinny rail and suitable rings
Still undecided about having a Detatchable magazine or not.

Optics-wise I can't decide to start out with a budget scope with Mil-Dot reticle, or bite the bullet now and go for a Nightforce or Huskemaw

Something really similar to Don's SPR I really like the looks of that rifle.

You can get a .50 for under $3K, check State Arms, Serbu, Armalite... and the .50 uppers like ALS, Ferret50, Safety Harbor and Ligamec. Surplus ammo is about $3.00 a round plus or minus .50 cents depending on where you look. This will easily get you to 1K yards and beyond if you want to do that.

Something to think about, plus if you live in a state that allows fun ammo. API, Spotter Tracer and others for the .50 add another level of fun.

Speedgoat,

The above rifle has a McMillan A5 stock. In fact, it is a pre-production model that Kelly sent me to test and evaluate for him. Below is a Winchester I had made by Jack Krieger in .30-06 with a McMillan A2 stock. Some advice: Make sure you get a 26" barrel in .30-06 so as to take advantage of the velocity you can get with the increased case capacity of the '06 as opposed to the .308. And plan on buying lots of Sierra 190gr MatchKings and RL22 powder. With such a load you can duplicate the Federal Gold Medal Match .300WM load.

Nice rifles guys! I debated on the .50 cal thing for a while. I just cant seem to take strong enough interest in them. I see them as a long range broadsword when i want a long range scalpel.

Anyon shoot the Savage ba110 in .338? outside of it not being a "custom" rifle, i like the reviews on it.

Each has his own preferences, but were I going to travel that road, I would probably opt for something in the 6.5mm bore, and a short action.

Nonetheless, those rifles are all pretty darned cool, and I'm sure OP would be well served by any of them.

"No smoking, no coffee, no tea, so regular sodas"

well .... there goes the whole day right there. HAHAHA!
I thought you weren't allowed to be a Marine if you didn't drink at least one cup of Joe in the morning. Don't you watch Agent Gibbs on NCIS????
Hahahaha!

A trued Remmy 700 in an Elisio or TubeGun stock and a good barrel can be the basis for a very accurate long range gun.
Trigger and scope choice could put you within your budget.

If I was doing it I would look for a used savage la put a 30 inch 280 rem barrel on it get a real good stock and shoot 162 grain amax .625 bc at over 3100 fps. that will get you easily to a 1000 yds and beyond and save you a lot of money
