I've been watching for a solid 10mm, and the full-size SWs get recommended a lot -but I haven't laid hands on one yet.

Meanwhile I just ran across a newish Megastar for $476 - Is that as strong as a 1006, or should I hold out for the Smith? From the prices on gunsamerica and gunbroker that seems to be in the ballpark for a 10mm Megastar (the .45 models are cheaper).

It's very heavy, but I'm not looking for it as a CCW - the recoil from the heaviest doubletap.com loads would be negligible, but will the mechanicals hold up?

Thanks,

MegaStars are much harder to find, so I would get it first.

The Mega should be just as durable as the 1006, but finding parts is a lot more difficult, when something does finally break.

I would buy the Mega now, get a 1006 a bit later, and round it all off with a Glock 10mm to do most of your 10 shooting on later.

*edit* Oh, and if you don't buy the MegaStar, could you point me in it's direction so I can buy it? Is it blued, or starvel finish? I want a blued one. *

Megastars are built like tanks, even more so than the Smiths.

I like the high cap mags in the megastar. Nothing like 14 rounds of 10MM to make some noise.

Smiths are a lot more avialable so since you have found a reasonable deal on the Star I would get that now.

I would get a Glock first. Unless you find a Smith pop up in the meantime.
the Glock is going to be the lightest & maybe the best for CCW.

I'm kind of confused on all the star recomendations, no flames. I was just raised by a bunch of LEO's telling me that star/llama etc were crap. That was the 70's & 80's thogh maybe a different company now?

wait ...

wait for the SW ... you will eventually find one for much less then $475 in vg condition. Heck ... go buy a new Glock20 for only $50 more ... MegaStars are great... but they are heavy as heck, zero service and hard to find parts. My advice is wait ... a 1006 will come around soon...

If there is at least one 14rds mag with it, it would be a good deal. With more than that, it becomes a great deal. DoubleTaps are easy shooting through the Megastar! They are hard to find, so if you are considering both, get the Megastar now and get a Smith later. The 1006 and 1076 are excellent weapons.

If money is tight look for a Witness. I've seen NIB full size Witness 10mm at shows for $400.

Well, I did it!

The Megastar has their quasi-stainless "Starvel" finish - and it has been shot, but I'd guess less than 1000 rounds, maybe less than 100. Came with an extra magazine new in the unopened packaging!

It came with a special tool for takedown, but if I keep that slide pin greased I won't need it.

Range report later.

Any suggestions from the "Ten Club" about what common factory ammo is full-power? (While I'm waiting for my first order from doubletap.com.)

Thanks,

Is that the one I saw at the Bullet Trap by any chance? That was a nice one. A megastar is probably the most over-built 10mm auto out there. Durability should be the least of your concerns.

Man o man, I was just up in Dallas last weekend and had my S&W 1006 with me. If ya would of posted a week earlier we could of gotten together and I'd let you put some rounds down range thru it.

Its a great piece. It is built tough, little heavy on the hip hiking but not unbearable and will shoot anything you feed it.

Dont know about the Mega but the 1006 is a keeper in my book and wont leave the collection anytime soon.

As for factory ammo, Winchester Silver Tip JHP ammo is pushing 1290 velocity and 649 lbs of energy at the muzzle. (posted performance numbers according to the website)

Thats what I have in my Smith until I order some Double Tap.

I love the Megastar (as I've mentioned with boring frequency), but I just ran across a Smith 1006 this weekend - and got it too! However, I'm finding that the Megastar is MUCH more comfortable to shoot, has a MUCH better trigger, and generally seems sturdier. 10mm Smith mags are a little easier to find, but still not too common.

I'm very tempted to just sell the 1006, BUT the new 9x25 barrels aren't made for Megastar, and 9x25 is very interesting...
