I recall reading an article a few years back, wherein the author wrote about a 'smith or firearms manufacturer who built up some 10mm 1911's using a standard .45 slide. No alterations to the breechface, but the extractor was fiddled with, naturally.

He went on to write that they used regular .45 magazines, which trick I had used with varying success myself in a 10mm 1911. What really caught my attention was the mention of the unaltered breechface.

So, inquiring minds want to know, have any of you ever done such a thing to a 1911? If so, what was involved? And lastly, but of course the purpose for this post, does anyone think it would work with a SIG 220?

In fact, one more question...does anyone know of 220's being converted to 10mm in ANY fashion?

Sig P220 10mm conversion...

I can't seem to remember reading about anyone having actually performed the conversion of a Sig P220 to 10mm Auto, though it has been discussed at times.

You might want to run a search on the acrhives over on TFL and GT and Pistolsmith.com for additional info.

The easiest way to make the P220 conversion would most likely use the .38 Super version as a starting point. Then modify the Rear Slide Insert and the frame Locking Insert. A change to the extractor profile would most likely be required also. On the magazine issue, I'm not sure if the .38 Super mag or the .45 ACP mag would be easier to get to work with the 10mm cartridge. BTW, I've not directly looked at these parts, as these conclusions were drawn from reviewing the schematic of the P220 parts breakdown. Recoil spring change(heavier) would be a must I would think.

Anyone else have a take on this? This is a conversion I'd really like to see!

I was thinking the same thing. The 10mm would beat a poor standard Sig frame into uselessness in under about 5k rounds, if not sooner.

Sig 220 ST in 10mm Auto.

Yep - it says all the right things to me. :D

But thinking back to the ol' TFL days, I seem to recall almost as many posts from those hoping for CZ to bless us with a 10mm version of their 97B.

A 10mm 97B would easily be a more refined and no doubt better 10mm than what Tanfaglio gives us presently in their CZ clone, the Witness.

But whether a Sig or a CZ in 10mm, either would be a winner.

Hmmm, what would it really take...

... to make the Tanfoglio Witness take that step up to top shelf with the Sig, CZ, Beretta, etc. class of pistols manufacturers?

A little better QC, some more attention to production quality and finally a better USA impo@#$r/Ser&*Cing agent maybe?

Truthfully, I don't think the Tan is as far away from getting there as one might think. You just gotta wonder if the powers-that-be at Tanfoglio would want to take the effort to get there?

(Okay, a little bit off topic, but I had to tease!)

It would have to be all owner built as Sig is not showing any interest in joining the 10mm resurgence.

Would be neat but with the high bore axis of the P-220, you better have 26 # recoil springs in there to adjust for the heavy snap factory 10mm provides.

Like shooting 45 ACP out of the ole P-220 but 10mm would be harsh.

I use a 24 # spring in my Glock 20 when playing with my sub-nuclear 200 grainers!!!!

BTW - the reviews on the EEA Witnesses in 10mm are great. That's an option.

? on the P220 ST...

To anyone that has a Sig P220 ST; does the slide use an insert like the alloy framed slide or is the ST slide a forged/machined item with no insert?

duncan,

On the Tanfoglio Witness topic, go over to this post on TFL and then read the associated links. Time and customer feedback may be slowly forcing a change at EAA, but I'll hold off on another Witness for now. Here's the link:
