Found a used 11-87 premier in beautiful condition.
12ga, I think 28" barrel.
I'm looking for a shotgun to get into trap shooting, but also be able to use it for other games.
What would be a good price for this?
I think asking is $595
Would this be a suitable shotgun for trap?

I think that price is probably $100 - $150 high, but you can check one of the auction sites to find some prices for comparison. That would be a fine gun for trap. As long as it had removable choke tubes, it would work well for other games too. For trap, you would want to get a shell catcher so it doesn't throw empties at the shooter to your right.

Dick's sporting goods around here also has new 11-87 sportsman
for $599 and $100 in mail in rebates, so $499.
These are the all synthetic ones.
Would that be a better choice?

I bought one last year just prior to hunting season for $375 in 90-95% condition. The seller is much too high. I'd go for $400 max if I really wanted the gun. Guns are higher just before hunting season. In the spring, after the hunting seasons are over, you get better buys due to overstock.

Buy new and get the rebate. You'll have $499 in it +tax.

Just remember that a pump gun is typically lighter than a semi or O/U. Light gun plus heavy loads equals higher recoil. Try to shoot one of the models you seek to see how well it fits. Gun fit is everything for recoil reduction and success in hitting the targets. Pumps are not really a handicap in trap singles, but in doubles, skeet doubles and sporting doubles, working the pump MAY not be the best action style.

I've shot a 11-87 Premier for the last 4 years in trap league. It's a great gun for the sport IMO. There are plenty of others using them and 1100's as well. Mine looks like the day I bought it and it gets 50-100shells per week. I don't think I'll ever wear it out.

The Premier is a much better finished gun than the sportsman's IMO. A good condition Premier should be worth more than a new sportsman.

I paid $475 for mine slightly used but like new 4 years ago. Yeah you'll want a shell catcher if you reload.

The Premier is a MUCH nicer gun than the Sportsman, and it's not just the finish. It's the balance and handling, also.

600 bucks, though? You can do better than that.

The shop isn't open again until Thursday. I thought the tag said $595, but now that you all say that is high, maybe it said $495, I'll have to look. He is normally very fairly priced, but if it says $595, I guess I'll have to keep looking.
Thanks
