Buddy calls all upset and later drops by for some expert ( ) advice.
Seems he bought this Remington 11-87 Premier 12 gauge with synthetic stock at a gun show. "Lightly used and hardly ever fired" or so he was told. He fired it 3-times for me to show me "the problem". At the 3rd shot, the magazine cap flies off! Of course the forestock is just sitting there no longer restrained by the cap. One more shot and we have a major problem here as I think the barrel will fly off!
After inspection I find that the ID threads on the magazine cap are severely stripped out. The OD threads on the magazine tube end are fine.
That is the only thing I can find wrong.
I strip the gun 100%, clean it up good, and oil it down on the insides. It was filthy! Did I mention the gun was "Lightly used and hardly ever fired"?
After reassembly I take the magzine cap off my trusty 870 12 gauge and put it on his auto. Not exactly the same cap, but the 11-87 fires off 6 consecutive rounds with no problem.
So what caused the magazine cap ID threads to strip out?
After a little research, I have several possible scenarios for you guys to chew on:
1. The 11-87 "target" barrels are not intended to handle heavy field loads over 3 1/4 dram equivalent and certainly not magnums. This barrel does not say "target", "skeet", "trap" or any other word on it indicating the gas comp hole is set up for lighter loads. But, maybe somebody shot too heavy a load for too long?
2. I cannot find that this gun was ever sold "new" with synthetic stocks. The stock assembly (butt stock) has "Remington" on the kick pad, but maybe are after market and the detent on the forestock is not worky right? (Although it seemed OK with my 870 mag cap).
3. Maybe somebody changed the magazine cap. But it looked to be the right one.
He has a new mag cap on order from Remington.
I have never seen this before. Ideas?
