Just got my new (for me) 1100 and in cleaning it up, I've become somewhat confused regarding the piston/piston seal. According to my quick research, it seems that some 1100's come with separate piston and piston seal, and some (newer?) 1100's have a combined piston/piston seal unit...is that right? The manual shows separate components, but I've seen reference to a "unit" setup in various parts lists and on some how-to web sites. Please help, as the pheasants are waiting...

Do you have a split ring and a piece that fits in it? Or do you have a single piece that goes on the mag tube?

There are two types, but as far as I was aware the 11-87 used the new one piece and 1100's still used two piece.

What is it that you need to know?

I think it is how to put it back on, the split ring seals on the OD, it goes on the mag tube first, then the other piece goes on. Same for the 1 piece unit, put the split ring toward the reciever and go hunting.

It looks like the one "assembly" would separate into two single components if that split ring were compressed. Because I got this gun used, and because it's my first semi, I'm just concerned that there is a part missing. The owner's manual was kinda vague, but the instruction label on the gas tube showed the parts as one unit.

My 1187 came with a 2 piece piston and seal. When it broke I replaced it with a 1 piece. No difference.

All newer 1100's as well as the 11-87 come with a one piece two part assy . The older style seperate two piece piston & piston seal is no longer available at out local Remington warranty shop and I have been told no longer made by Remington.

Yep, one-piece on my 1100 that was purchased new in 2001. The instruction sticker on the mag tube shows a one-pice unit as well.

I thought the same as you.
I prefer the older style set up,have always liked the 1100 better than the 11-87...seem to hold up better, among other things.IME
Just ain't right...your supposed to look for more than one part when you drop it...not one. Sigh...
