my liberal bro in san fran called me up and asked me for advice on a scattergun for sporting clays. he's just starting out and on a budget, say, less than $1,000 or so, give or take.

now, i've taken him shooting (handgun and NFA toys) in the past but recently he's been getting into sporting clays and trap with his buddies. so, this is an interesting development.

anyhoo, would welcome any suggestions you might have ... out of the blue i thought a Remingon 1187 would be nice but to be honest guys, it's been a while since i've blown up clay pigeons. my idea of a shotgun is a benelli m3. :neener:

also ... if anyone can suggest an NRA gun safety course my bro could take in the area (san francisco .. ! ... ), please let me know.

The current crop of semi autos (Beretta 391,Browning Gold, Remington 1100/11-87) fits right in. So do used 1100s, X2s,390s and so on.

I suggest your bro should go to a range and try out a few, see what works for him....

FWIW, I would highly suggest an 1100. Have him splurge on a choke tube set for it, and have him get the 28" barrel. That way, he can use it for both trap and sporting clays.

I use my Great-Grandfather's handed-down Remington 1100 (alost 50-years-old and still looks brand new). I bought a 28" Rem-choke barrel for it and a set of Briley tubes. It works GREAT, and you can pick-up a used 1100 for way less than $1000, even with accessories.
