Happy New Year Everyone!

Furthering my ongoing YouTube series of 12 gauge shotgun ammo testing, I just finished editing my first gelatin review of a rifled slug: Winchester's SuperX Hollow Point Rifled Slug.

http://youtu.be/FKge3FF0Hx4

What made me start with this particular slug is a close range encounter I had with a large black bear where I put 3 of these slugs (with perfect placement) into his front shoulder he was turning towards me, but after gutting and skinning him I was shocked to find that only one of them had made it into the vitals, and just barely.

Subsequently I did the big science project on shotgun slugs and definitely found some better performers, and now that I've got my YouTube channel up and running I'm re-doing a bunch of these tests for the camera so that others might also benefit. This video's the first one, and I've got another three slug reviews I'm still working on getting edited, so stay tuned!

Thanks for watching and your feedback!

Cheers,

Brobee

Brenneke dixie terminators or roll your own I trust foster more than sabots brenneke short mags are my choice for store bought slug on anything that may fight back

I'm about to watch this video after I post this.

Is the DDupleks Monolit32 still available? I'd be very interested to see a penetration test with that round.

I'm going to try some Rem copper solids tomorrow AM if I find a suicidal doe hanging around.

As I expected, but thanks for proving my past opinions of foster slugs. :D I have gotten into a few arguments over whether they're the cat's meow in Alaska for bear defense. Some think they're just sort of .460 Weatherby solids, never figured out how they got that idea, though. :D Logically, they'll do about what they did.

Brenneke's should perform better I'm betting. :D I never really worried about it as I don't hunt bigger non-feathered game with shotguns and ain't no bears in south Texas. I did kill a nice buck the other day with my 20 gauge from about 35 yards using 3 buck. Head shot. Shot placement is the key, there. :D First I've ever shot anything bigger than a sandhill crane with a shotgun. :D Shotguns are nothing if not versatile.

Haven't watched the video yet, but I've been subbed for a while. I really like your channel, didn't know you were on THR.

If you read benneke's FAQ this slug and the slug sold as Heavy field magnum are the same slug just different coating and box

I.M.H.O. It is the best slug made that works in a smoothbore out of a rifled barrel dixie terminators would be my chioce .
I do not know of a sabot I would trust against dangerous game
By the way the preformance of the foster slug in the video is about perfect for deer sized thin skin game what the slugs are designed for

^^^ That's a good video. I'm still anxious to see what BrobeeBiter does to test the Black Magic rounds. I'm hoping he duplicates the tests, as closely as he's able, for each round to be compared. Will the Brenneke penetrate the ordnance gelatin as deeply as the Federal? How will the the recovered slugs compare? It would be great to also see these compared shooting through several layers of wood, steel, auto safety glass and a really huge piece of pork shoulder.:)

Is the jello 10%, held at 38+F degrees? Is is calibrated with the BB gun (chronograph the BB gun?) If not, it might as well be mud, as far as it relates to proper testing. I am not impressed with how the 10% jello does, since live animal tests have proven that the jello expands bullets much better than vital organ tissue does. The lungs are just air sacks, ya know.

In slugs I like Winchester sabot slugs for deer, for bear I would think the premium with higher velocity and the copper jacket would give more penetration. I am interested in the results.
A study by Alaska DNR concluded the best for Brown bear as a emergency stopper was a 30-06 with good bullets or a very large magnum. Tough heavy bullets pushed at highest velocities. Killing power is penetration, energy, bullet performance (dumping energy in the vitals, and mst of all, shot placement. A shotgun is a handy pointing device with the right slugs.

Off topic, but do you have a link to that study? I've had an '06 brush gun project going for a bit.
