These are my "walkabout" shotguns, loaded with slugs or round ball I can feel warm and comfy walking in bear and cougar country. Slip in a shot-shell, and one can be warm, comfy and not so hungry. They all fire a .690" ball over 110 grains of Swiss black powder just fine, and the "Companion" will fire the 3" magnum slug loads, which in a five-pound gun kind of has a kick to it. I just plain to fire the black powder ball load in it too, in the future. Which ain't no soft shooter either, but not as painful as the 3" magnum smokeless factory load.

Top gun is a Janssen and Sons sawed off double. (LEGAL LENGTH) Next is my Grand-Dads Janssen and Sons Double. It only weighs a little over seven pounds with 30" barrels, so it qualifies (in my mind) as a Walkabout.

Next is my "Companion" folding shotgun, I cut the barrel down so that when folded, the muzzle does not protrude past the buttstock.

On the bottom is a Stevens I "restored", or fixed up. It was a $50.00 special at a gun show. It used to break open when fired, but I discovered it will take/fire heavy black powder loads without breaking open. Bonus. I refinished the stock, fixed the break-open lever, and put a barrel extension on it as it just looked too stubby to me at 18".

Now for the Little Skeeter chamber inserts. I got some for my 20 gauge guns (all two of them) and was quite pleased with them. For grouse and rabbit, or squirrel, the patterns are just fine. In both 20 and 12 gauge they allow me to carry more shot loads at less weight and bulk, than I could with the 20's or 12's. Especially the 12 gauge.

I did find that the 410 to 12 inserts would not chamber in the older guns. So I cut one down for the double barrels and the Stevens. In the Companion the full length one fits and works perfectly. The one I cut down is too short now for 3" shells, but fires the 2.5" 410's perfectly with great patterns at 20 yards and under. Great enough for the range that I see grouse and rabbit at, usually 15 yards.

You can see what I did. The shortened insert fires and patterns fine in the old guns. But it's limited to the 2.5" shells. Or at least that's my limit. When opened up and fired, the end of a 3" would be sticking out the end. The long unmodified one fits and fires the 3-inchers and patterns fine in the Companion. I'm kind of amazed, and don't really understand why these inserts still pattern well in an over size barrel, and still throw the shot hard enough to kill stuff. ? Maybe you know! ?

Okay, good to go and wander the wilderness, get lost, live off the land (along with a .22 pistol) and fight off the hoards of Big Cats and Grizzly bears that are out to get me. Thanks for listening.
