I have been looking for 12g slug info regarding the use of 3" vs. 2 3/4" slugs out of a rifled barrel. My Mossberg bolt likes Federal 3". My Remington 1187 shoot ALL 3" slugs terrible, but groups 2 3/4 (most brands) well.

I hunt in areas where a 200 yard shot is possible. Is there enough power to kill (deer size game) at this range with a 2 3/4 slug? How about a 3" slug? I've dropped them at 150 yds, but that's it... Where can I get good ballistic info??

Thanks... (First time post!)

It's not so much about power as it is trajectory and bullet drop. In this regard, not all slugs are created equal. You'll have to narrow the question down to the particular load you are interested in. For example this Hornady SST load:

https://www.hornady.com/shop/?page=ballistics/popup&product_sku=8623

only drops 6.7 inches at 200 yds.

Most ammo makers provide this type of ballistic data online now.

In my Mossberg, the biggest difference I noticed at the range when I went from 2 3/4" shells to 3" was the blood dripping down my face from the point at which the scope was driven into my brow ridge.

It's so hard to look cool in that situation.

Slug information..............

Lazy,

One of the foremost experts on slugs is James Gates of Dixie Slugs in Florida.

If you visit his web site and contact him, he can give you a definitive answer regarding almost anything regarding 2 3/4" Versus 3" slugs.

I use his 3" Predator slugs for both hunting and professional use. If you're knowledgeable in the art of reloading or ammo development, you'll appreciate how his slugs are put together. You'll find none any finer. James has his slugs tested by professionals.

Folks,

Thanks for the quick reply's and info. BTW, I have a great picture of a buddy in VT last year who got whacked over his nose by a scope after a muzzy blast. He's standing over a buck with a look of pain and joy- so I can relate. Also, thanks for the reply's with website info. Good stuff. Great site.
