124 Berry Sub-Sonic test! wish me luck

Most 124 grain will be subsonic unless you’re pushing loads at or near max. You started with near max load and the highest charge according to Hodgdons online data. Run 4.4 and you’ll be fine. Unless you’re shooting quarter sized groups at 10 yards, you won’t notice any accuracy difference.
that 124 4.8 was very gas heavy, and wild! but that was near 1100fps

I’m thinking 4.4 or 4.2 would be very effective 124’s

note on the 147grain @ 3.5, I think that’s the bear minimum functioning amount of powder. Some rounds would not cycle the slide all the way.

After 124’s, I’m going to try a 115 grain mouse fart load that would operate fully but be the most quite possible!

all reloaders should get into Suppressors! FUN FUN FUN

Around this part of Florida nearly every cattle rancher and chicken farmer has suppressed rifles for coyotes, weasels, raccoons, and other night-time predators. Nothing cool or John Wickish - a lot of .22 bolt guns and single-shots - mostly using Gemtech cans. They’re good suppressors and not terribly costly. If you have a need for one.

Cost of supressors are CRAZY, once you figure what your getting, but nobody’s forcing me to buy! 😂

I started the paper work for a 45/70 suppressor. That should be extra fun

A 405gr, huh. Well, if you want subs in a 405 I think IMR 4198 is going to be your friend.
I’ve got some trapdoor loadings that may be close, and another member here has given me some of his data to look at…
I have not looked into the IMR 4198 yet, tho.

I will share his name: @Bearded Phil because he has been so helpful, but I can’t share HIS data….

Way to be, @Bearded Phil!!
👍😁
I never even thought about a suppressed trap door. Until now. Kinda wish I hadn’t sold and given all mine away. Live and learn.

Suppress Trap Door!!! I don’t think it gets any cooler than that!

Here me out, it just a common Ruger #1 with amazing wood… But send out my #1 45-70 to CS for threading!!! Might do it. I cherish this gun more that any other in my trailer collection

Got the test loads ready! We doing:
124 Berry w/Universal at 1.150
3.8
4.0
4.2
4.4

Also, I’m testing those loads on my 9mm/357 Uberti 1873 SAA clone. So far it only likes 147 3.5 & 95 7.0 HS6

Shout out to $189 Pro 4000 Lee Big Boy! did these test loads in like 15 minutes! Love my Cheap trailer park Lee!

Not sure what OAL you are using but I typically use 1.130"-1.135" for 124 gr FMJ/plated RN bullets. I think you will like 4.3 gr charge around published OAL to produce 130 power factor.
1.150 and I think the right combo will be in the 4.0 to 4.4 range. Loudness & accuracy
I have done comparison testing with 1.150"-1.160" and 1.130"-1.135" and shorter OAL produced smaller groups from greater neck tension.

Try seating the bullets deeper to 1.130"-1.135" and redo the range test and you may be surprised at smaller groups you may get. (For 115 gr FMJ/RN, I also found shorter 1.130"-1.135" produce smaller groups and if I want to squeeze a bit more accuracy, I will seat down to 1.110" ... FYI, Atlanta Arms shortened their most accurate AMU 115 gr FMJ from 1.130" to 1.110" ;) )

And since you are using plated bullets with soft lead core, minimize taper crimp which could reduce bullet diameter but brass spring back will reduce neck tension (Which throws accuracy out the window). So for .356" sized Berry's bullets, .356" + .011" + .011" = .378" taper crimp at the case mouth.

Why Not! 124 load Test Part 3 next week!
