In your alls opinion, what would be the best type of shot to stockpile for a 12ga shotgun? Not looking for any specific situation to use it in, but an overall good type of round to stockpile. Thanks!

Have a variety...from Birdshot to Rifled-Slug, and, all that's in-between.

For C-Note or so, you can have one heck of a nice variety Stockpile.

Depends on your intended usage - are you talking about loaded ammo or the shot itself for reloading?

I run a lot of target loads through my guns every year, so having a few thousands rounds readily loaded with the components to reload in batches of 5000 works for me. Throw in a few boxes of some larger shot sizes, including buck, and I'm good to go.

Being a universalist rather than a specialist, my ammo pile is varigated.

There's lots of slugs, 00 buck and some 1 and 4 buck. Some 3 buck for the 20 gauges.

There's hevishot for waterfowl. 2s for geese, 4s for ducks. Some turkey loads.

6s for rabbits and squirrels, Target loads in 7 1/2 for smaller birds and clays. I go with 8 1/2s in the summer for most clays, but never game.

That's about it.....

I got some cheapo "Target" loads for messing around, HD specific shells for uninvited houseguests, and plenty of Buckshot and Slugs should I ever wanna go hunting. General consensus is correct, Get a little bit of everything. Shotshells are cheap enough when compared to other firearms(I've owned an 8mm Mauser and a .30 Carbine back when ammo was scarce for both, and that really hurt in the wallet area), so feel free to get a sampler.

I usually like to load up with what my dad calls "Fruit Salad", which is Birdshot, Buckshot, Slug, repeat until full. It gives you a good variety for whatever comes your way.

Wally world usually has boxes of 100 7 1/2 shot for ~$25. I try to keep 2 on hand for clays. I've got various shells for various purposes, and at any given time, I have stockpiled somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 shells or so.

You can't stockpile one kind of shotgun ammunition that will perform well in a variety of situations. The issue is that any particular shotshell load is pretty specific in its application. Used for its intended purpose it will perform admirably but used outside of that, performance will be dismal.

To cover every conceivable situation with the least number of different shotshell loads, I think one would need a rifled slug load, a buckshot load somewhere from 00 to #1 in size, and a steel birdshot load in a #4 size. I say steel because that will cover waterfowl hunting. You can use steel for small game, too. It's not optimal, but it will work. If you are talking about a SHTF scenario, I think a #6 lead load would be more practical.

It is hard for me to think of ammunition outside specific situations, especially something as varied as shotshells.

I have shot a lot of trap and therefore have kept on hand shells and components for target loads with #8.

A shotgun is effective at repelling boarders so I always have some buckshot. I don't anticipate sustained firefights or apocolyptic breakdown, so it is not a whole lot of buckshot.

I used to shoot some 3-gun which was mostly birdshot with the occasional slug target.

I don't hunt and don't need the wide variety of game loads from quail to goose to deer.

I kind of agree with Sgt Sabre, W.W. Greener's book has testimonials from Brits shooting about everything short of dangerous game with No 6.

This thread made me get up and do a shotgun ammo inventory.
At any one time I usually have at $75-$100.00 worth of shotgun ammo about and last summer I caught a good sale on buck shot and slugs which I readily bought.
At present my inventory consists of:
One 25 round box of Federal 2 3/4 high brass #6
One 25 round box of Fiocchi 2 3/4 high brass #4
Five 25 round boxes of Federal low brass #6
One 25 round box of Remington low brass #8
Two 15 round boxes of Winchester 2 3/4 00 Buck
Four 5 round boxes of Winchester 2 3/4 #4 buck
Three 5 round boxes of Winchester Winlite 00 Buck(very pleasant to shoot)
Two 5 round boxes of Brenneke 2 3/4 K.O. Rifled Foster Slugs
Two 5 round boxes of Federal 2 3/4 low recoil Tru Ball Rifled Foster Slugs
Two 5 round boxes of Winchester High Velocity 2 3/4 Rifled Foster Slugs(not so pleasant to shoot)

As a matter of fact now that the price of oil and gasoline are spiking up I am going to be searching sales prices and hopefully soon buy some more ammo for the pistols, rifles, and shotguns before the prices on these commodities start rising again.

I bought a case of Rio OO buck last summer, have about 4 cases of reloads for clays, and probably 6 boxes of loads for waterfowl and a case of #4s. I also have about 2500 once fired Rem STS hulls on hand, 10,000 wads, 3 two liter soda bottles of #8 shot, just bought a new keg of Red Dot, 4 sleeves of primers, and a Littleton Shotmaker. I am pretty set for now.

I am shooting it out of my Remington which has a Hasting straight rifled Wadlock barrel on it...everything patterns great in this gun...lol. My dad is please with it in his Winchester 1300 and I have read other reviews that say it pattern very well.
