If you had to pick one type of gun to stockpile multiple copies of "just in case" the SHTF and you need to arm up the neighborhood, which gun would it be? Price is definately a factor, so I would be looking for something effective, cheap, and easy to use, reliable and durable. I've got a few ideas, let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions:

Winchester model 12's or Mossberg 590's

SKS

some cheap stockpile of surplus military bolt guns... if so what caliber? 30-06 sounds good...

"effective, cheap, and easy to use, reliable and durable."

Sounds like the SKS to me. Not to mention that 7.62x39 is dirt cheap.

i'm going to cast my vote for the SKS. Cheap, and MAN, talk about reliable!

I vote for just growing your own collection if nothing happens you can continue to use it. The only loss is having to stockpile a variety of ammo, but what gun enthuist doesn't do that any way. I keep 200 rnds of good self defence ammo for every hangun, shotgun and bolt action rifle and a 1000 for every semi action rifle. This is at the very minimum but includes things like single action revolvers. I could arm the 'hood if I had to and I can continue to enjoy variety in my collection. I have almost a dozen 870's as I can't pass up a good deal on one. Ammo does start to add up.

Southern Ohio Gun has Yugoslavian SKS's for $119.95. That'd be my choice for "arming the neighborhood."

As far as cheap milsurp bolt-actions, they offer an M44 carbine for $59.95. That's cheap!

hmmm

Thanks for all the help so far guys, it's much appreciated!

Those Yugoslavian SKS's look like a good buy, I wonder why they say no sales to Kali, as far as I knew, the SKS was still legal here because it doesn't have a detachable magazine.

I should have posted a poll or something, but it seems that people think that going with lots of rifles is better than with lots of shotguns; any reasons for this? I figured the big advantage of a shotgun was that since there isn't any accuracy to be had, it would be fairly effective even in untrained hands. The rifle's obvious advantage is ammunition carrying capacity and long range accuracy... but who knows how much use long range accuracy will be with an untrained brute squad.

Anyway, keep the suggestions coming!

They don't sell to CA because of the grenade launching spigot on the end. Yugos are being sold here with the offending part taken off and a muzzle break of some sort replacing it.

Why on earth would I try to arm the neighborhood? If they don't have a gun when the need arises, that's their bad. I may be my brother's keeper, but the neighborhood's.

No one said he would GIVE guns to the neighbors. If the SHTF big time I bet he can sell them for at least $1k a pop. Sounds like a good business plan to me :)

How about a Mauser. I bought an 8mm Mauser in Arizona for $89.94. 500 rounds of ammo was only $35.00. It fits the criteria of cheap, accurate and reliable.

If I had to arm the neighborhood for a SHTF situation it would be a bolt action HANDS DOWN. Anyone who already knew what they were doing would have brought their own favorite weapon to the meeting. Everyone else with the panicked look on their face would be issued a bolt action because WHEN not if they have a ND I don't want another cartridge put in the chamber without thinking on their part. I can just see them with an AK/SKS that just had a ND turning around (with their finger on the trigger) to ask you what had just happened.

If you want bolt action, I'd say get Mosin-Nagant, easy enough to scope if you wanted to. Or some .308 Mausers, ammunition is plentiful.

If you want semi-auto, get the SKS, ammo is cheap and plentiful.

I'm not exactly sure that I would want to arm a bunch of people that have never laid a hand on a gun. I would, however, be more than happy to arm my family and some of my friends, they are all at least familiar with firearms safety.

Blackrazor, I'm just curious. Assuming you're the leader of this neighborhood-SHTF-squad, how would you be armed? Personally, I'd carry the same rifle as everyone else, plus a sidearm, probably my BHP 9mm.

Bushmaster AR-15, 16" fluted bbl, flat top w/ ACOG and ARMS #40 rear sight, Arc LS flashlight. Can't afford a boatload of these, but I'm so familiar with it I would never use anything else. BHP 9mm for back up (great gun, IMHO).

In a situation like this, I'd have to go with the milsurp bolt-action crowd. Be it a M44 or a K98. Cheap price, cheap ammo, and you even get a bayonet! Woo-hoo!

Though I've also heard pretty convincing arguments for going the route of bolt-action or maybe semi-auto .22 LR's. The line of reasoning being 'a hit with a .22 is better than a miss with a 7.62x54R.
