I just picked up a brand new 12ga. coach gun from my local dealer. It came wrapped in plastic and a greasy oil, so I took it home, without checking it out.

I cleaned it, and while I was cleaning it noticed a wierd ring about 2" from the breach on the inside chamber wall. It follows the machining marks on the chamber walls, but then looks a lot like a pitted ring that you can feel when you rub your finger over it. The barrels looked mirror clean, but I got a lot of what I suppose was surface rust (lots of orange patches)...

The left chamber has a similar spot, only not as pronounced, and not in the same spot.

I am bringing this in tomorrow for my dealer to look at (at his request), but am wondering if I am just overreacting (this is my first double barrel shotgun) or if this is a legit concern...

If it's a new-in-the-box gun and the chamber ring concerns you, it's legit. Taking it back to the dealer is a good first step in resolving that concern IMHO.

Please don't take offense if you already know this, but you'll always see a "ring" in the location you described on a shotgun; it's usually the difference in diameter between the chamber and barrels. If you take a pencil or other non-marring object and can run it from the chamber to the barrel, you'll see that it's tapered at the ring, not an abrupt step, and is normal. People often have this same question about revolver chambers, which have the same taper from the case to the bullet, and looks for all the world like 6 abrupt rings in the cylinder.

Problem resolved by manufacturer. Great customer service who explained that it sounded like a reamer got caught, which is the same diagnosis that my dealer gave when he looked at it this afternoon. (it was a real accidental defect, not the ring where the barrels meet the chamber, good guess though!)

"Old" gun goes back, "new" gun gets shipped, happy all around.
