this is a region to region type question/answer.

How do people where you live score deer?

I live in NE and if a deer was a 7x7 we would normally call it a "7 point", it is understood that the deer is typical and had seven on each side. If a buck has 6 on one side and 7 on another he would be a 6x7. They would not be 14pt bucks or 13pt. bucks, that identification system is almost never used here.

I see the total point counting done a lot on tv and was just curious how you all do it and where you're at.

I've always called a buck like that a 14-pointer and I'm in New England.

From what I've heard, mulies are often referred to as "7x7" or "5x5" or whatever.

Here in WI we use a complicated method (addition) and count the number of total points to describe our bucks.

Then again we also are know to eat brats and put cheese on our heads at sporting events, so take it for what it's worth.:)

There is Eastern Count and Western Count. Western count usually refers to Mule Deer, but with the increase of whitetails in the West, I can understand using the method for whitetails too.

We also use a very complicated method in Tennessee.... 14 points = 14 pointer. Points are supposed to be 1" or longer also to be defined as a "point". I believe that is a Boone & Crocket thing.

Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North & South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Tennessee and Kentucky (that I know of) are all states where (most) folks just count the total number of points on each side. If a deer had a spike on one side and 7 points on the other, he'd still be an "8-point" buck.

I've always had the impression that the 4x4, 3x3, etc. stuff was just a western thing.

This came up last year when a hunter in Washington took a 4 pointer. The regulations specified a 3 point minimum for the area he was hunting. Problem was that he took a 2x2, but according to the regulations, a 3 point buck is a 3x1, 3x2 or 3x3. Whoops :what:

Otherwise, call it what you like :)

Here in Minnesota we count all the points. Also we have a nicknames for a few of them. for example, a 4 pointer is a "fork", and if they just have 1 tine on each side they are a "spike", also if the buck has 1 on each side but they are shorter than either 2 or 3 inches, i forget the exact length, we call them a "button buck." button bucks dont qualify for a buck tag, you have to use an antlerless tag for those. i dont know if those nicknames are used in any other states, but i'm pretty sure counting all the points is pretty common in the midwest.

Illinois -we count em all.
In other words my 11 pt buck was a 6x5. and of course we only have whitetail deer.
I always thought that the Missouri River was about where you had to count different.

That is word for word (killed an 11 pointer last year) exactly what I was going to say.
