This is my first posting on any forum ,ever. so bare with me.
My dad wants me to go shoot some clays with him, and I buoght the least expensive 12ga. I could find. A H&R Topper Deluxe. Was this a wise purchase? Could you please tell me more about this gun? Thanks!:)

There's a member here that shoots skeet doubles with one. Break-action single shots have a certain charm. NEF has been around forever and has a good reputation.

Welcome, and have fun.

Welcome to The High Road Proteus.
If your Topper Deluxe features a walnut stock, cut checkering, and a choke tube you actually bought the gun for a very reasonable price.
I happen to like Harrington Richardson and New England Firearm single barrel guns and frankly there are too few gunmakers still offering these types of guns.

In my view if yoiu are able to become proficient at busting clay birds with a single shot you will not have any problem busting them with any form of repeating gun down the road.

Your gun may feature a 3 inch magnum or even 3 1/2 inch magnum chambering.
Avoid using these shells in the gun and stick with 2 3/4 inch 1 ounce to 1 1/4 ounce target and field loads.
This recommendation isn't because the firearm won't handle the magnum loadings, it will.
This recommendation is based on personal use of Topper shotguns and the recoil associated with heavy magnum loadings will in all likelyhood, be greater than a new shooter will be willing or able to bear.
In simple terms, the perceived recoil the shooter feels when firing heavy magnum loads in these types of firearms can be quite severe.
Enjoy your new gun and good luck with the claybird shooting.

Welcome,Proteus. I took my first 40 geese or so with a similar 16 gauge.

Singles like this are lots of fun. As said, leave the heavy loads alone. In fact, the 7/8 oz loads now becoming available are perfect for one of these.

Decent price. Enjoy....

Depends on your area....in my area that wasnt too good of a buy. But in the end if you like the gun thats all the matters.

In my area you can get a Maverick 88, which is a "less expensive" version of a Mossberg 500. This is a pump-action gun, they run $158. A pump-action 12ga is about the most versatile firearms one person could own.

Not that I dont have single action shotguns, I do. I own a 2 or 3, these are usually found for around $50 used. I have bought a couple .410s for my kids to shoot.....and I think I may have 20ga laying around.

If you have a decent gun shop nearby your also likely to find racks of used but very serviceable pump guns for around $100......I gave $75 for a used Mossberg 500 20ga not to long ago.

Best thing about those H&R/NEF singles is that you just can't wear them out. Simplistic in it's best form. Allows you to focus on the fundamentals of actually shooting without worrying about function. It'll do ya.
