155gr SMK .308...600yd?

I know 175gr SMK would be better, and I actually have 1000 in the way to my house, but there's a 600yd comp in 3 weeks in Oklahoma that I really want to shoot in. I have a load already worked up in 155gr SMK.

Question is, would these 155gr SMK be sufficient enough to compete out to 600yd? Or should I just hold off until October comp and do a work up with the 175gr's? The 155gr load I have, normally shoots .5 MOA if I'm doing my part, but haven't ever stretched it out to 600yds as I don't have any ranges to test on.

Do you have access to a 600yd range right now? If so, why not try those 155gr SMKs? That will be the ultimate test and give you an answer specific to your rifle.

Nope, longest range I have access to is 200yd.

I think you will be just fine at 600 yards.
The 155 grain bullets are meant for Palma shooting where that is the maximum weight and targets are at 800, 900, and 1000 yards. Of course it takes a long barrel and heavy loads but you won't have to push so hard at 600.

Are yours the standard 155 SMK, stock no 2155 or the new Palma no 2156?


My last Long Range shooting was with the 155 gr Scenar, same idea, a bit higher BC. But I have some Sierras around someplace.

They are the Palma ones. I didn't know there was two different kinds until after I ordered them, since the .308 was new to me. I like them so far. I do have a hot load I push them with but during testing I worked up to it, and all three holes were touching and could be covered with a dime...and that was without verifying the weight of the bullets.

They are fine for 600. Wish I could find some more at a good price.

Do you know the velocity?
If you do, a ballistics program will tell you the comeup from 200 to 600 well enough to get on paper.

No don't have a chrono yet to know velocity, but that's the next on my list to get. I have a guesstimate but that's it.

600 yards will be easy with those projectiles. The real question is do you know how they will behave out of your rifle at that range. You should never start a competition with an unknown rifle/ammo combination because that is a recipe for low scores. I've already tested this concept for you

It's always fun trying but you'll be amazed how much better you are next time around when you actually know what your ammo is doing. Any day at the range is better than a day at work! Have fun.

At 600 your vertical dispersion will be noticeable at 30 fps ES on your loads. You might want to work up your loads to find the most consistent, velocity wise, so that you don't find yourself "chasing the spotter" for vertical.
