However, Coates' target was wearing a blubber layer. Hydrostatic shock didn't stop the assailant, however, none of the bullets apparently reached anything vital either.
I don't have the medical reports in front of me, and I only know what was related in the several training tapes I have watched. However, each training segment stated that several of Coates' .357 bullets passed "within millimeters" of vital structures, but struck none.
Translation (to my mind): the bullets penetrated just fine, and plenty deep enough. Arguments about the validity of hydrokinetic trauma (or lack thereof), however, are perfectly valid.
My opinion, based upon what I have seen, is that Coates did everything right from a shooting standpoint, putting the rounds nicely COM, and was just amazingly unlucky.
