I have a stash of older Federal Nyclad .38 spl +p 158 grain lead semiwadcutter hollowpoints; I want to use this as a defensive load in my snubby S&W 642-2. What are your thoughts about this? Wasn't this the revolver load for NYPD before switching to the Speer Gold Dot 135 gr +p?

Thanks.

Don't know about NYPD using them, but the Nyclads had a stellar reputation.

I wouldn't have a problem carrying them, but given their scarcity I would personally opt for Rem 158 gr +P LSWCHP.

They where a great load in their time and I would still use them if I had some. But they stopped making them for a reason.

I have about 8 boxes of those. Great defense load.

You probably know that the lead is in "dead soft" condition. The nylon holds it together but they do deform very well.

I do not know this for a fact but I did read that the nyclads left no ballistic signature when used from a polyoganal barrel and that this may have had something to do with their stopping production. Could be pure bs to.
