16" 6.5 grendel Vs. 18" 5.56

Doesn't matter what purpose. Across the board a 16" 6.5 Grendel with factory Hornady A-Max will eat a 5.56 18" SPR's lunch and ask for seconds and the price to shoot arguments is invalid. Factory 6.5 Grendel 123gr A-Max can be had for 22.00 a box, most premium .223/5.56 match ammo is more than that.

Black Hole Weaponry makes a 8 twist .264 LBC barrel, that shoots the factory Hornady 123 A-Max and 123gr SST's like a house of fire. Excellent hunting cartridge also. We a have taken Mule deer with a 16" barrel at 396 yards and 302 yards. Last year we shot a bull Elk at 411 with a 120gr Ballistic Tip from a 16" 6.5 Grendel carbine.

My Black Hole .264 LBC barrels flat shoot the Factory Hornady ammo.

.566 @ 200 yards.

This is factory Hornady 123gr SST's @ 300yards from my 26" Black Hole , 8 twist .246 LBC barrel.

Pure nonsense, the purpose ALWAYS matters.

That depends. There are quite a few PURPOSES for which the 5.56 would be a better choice. Varmints, be they ground squirrels or coyotes. Home defense, the 5.56 is plenty. Target shooting, unless you're shooting at extended ranges, the 6.5 'may' be viewed as wasted money. For plinking and shooting for fun, the 5.56 is without peer among centerfire rifle cartridges purely due to the cost of ammo/components.

...and the price to shoot arguments is invalid.
Oh yeah, you decide that for everybody, all by yourself???

beautiful rifles, what magazines do you prefer?
I like the ASC mags, I prefer the 17 rounders. They don't get in the way when shooting in the prone. 17 rounds is plenty enough to get any job done, including home defense and they fit nice and comfy in a back pocket.

As for home defense. Ask yourself this. Put yourself in some idiot criminals shoes, if you had to choose between getting your ticket punched with a 5.56 or a 6.5 Grendel. I would imagine 9 out of 10 criminal morons would opt for a hit from a .223/ 5.56 rather than a 123gr A-Max or SST from a Grendel.

Thanks for the insight into the criminal mind.

That's one of the sillier things I've read on THR. I'm guessing 9 out of 10 criminal morons don't know what a 5.56 or 6.5 Grendel is.....

You've lived a sheltered forum life then. That's right , your "Guessing".
He said, "I've read on THR." That is different from the typical forums. If you would like to feel more at home regarding those, you should know that it is "you're" rather than "your". :neener:

Wow, somebody is charging hard out of the gates nice and biased.

I'll second Craig, purpose always matters.

There's also several brands offering match ammo at less than $.50/rd and of course blasting ammo for less than $.25/rd. so just cause you wanna compare premium ammo doesn't mean that a 5.56 isn't going to be cheaper to feed. That's a false dichotomy.

I already own a 16" BCM 5.56 socom upper. I purchased a seekins precision keymod rail for my next upper build. I have access to purchasing a 16" 6.5 grendel barrel and bolt made by saber defense at a good price so thats a possibility. my only hang up is that it is an m4 contour. i'm looking for something to bridge that gap between my recce rifle and my 24" savage .308. I don't hunt big game but someday I may start to.

I've investigated home defense shootings where the victim fired more than 17 rounds.

12guagecody,

So is that the purpose you are looking for? Big game hunting? Do you reload or buy factory ammo?

Personally I wouldn't go with the M4-contour for a Grendel. It really shines for longer ranges and its accuracy. An M4 carbine contour is probably not going to take full advantage of its potential.

What's going on with the magazine release? Never seen anything like that.
It's one of Odin Works variants of magazine release extensions. I tried one of their first models when they first came to market and I liked the quality machining and the design.

Odin does several different versions. Flat, slopped out, slopped in. I use one version or another on all my AR's now along with KNS Anti-Ration pins and a MagPul BAD lever or Phase 5 ambi bolt catch/release.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the "Tribal" charging handles. :)

With the info you just posted here I would recommend you go with the Grendel. You already have a 16" in 5.56 going with an 18" SPR in the same caliber is not going to offer you many more options. The Grendel is extremely versatile. You can legitimately hunt medium size game with it, you can have a good time punching paper with good accuracy, and even a 16" can stabilize bullets out to 1000 yards. I have had several ARs in several calibers and the most versatile rifle I have is my 18" BHW 6.5 Grendel. Its light enough for me to carry in the bush and it packs enough punch to kill whatever I might run into in said bush.

It sure took a lot of ego driven responses to get to what SavageShooter2k clarified. I'm new to the 6.5 Grendel but have built and shot AR's in .223, 6.8 SPC, .300 AAC Blackout, 7.62x39 and am still reloading and getting to know my 6.5 Grendel build but so far I like the .300 the best.

But, that's just one mans opinion. Perhaps over time I will come to love the 6.5 as others have but the jury is still out on that one.
