Hornady calls 44gr max and hodgden calls 46 max. I did a ladder to a 43.5 max and found a decent but not wonderful load at 42gr but online searches show I should be in the 44/45 gr range to close my group. Does varget do better with higher charges? Should I continue my ladder to the hodgden max? Rifle is 1/10 twist savage axis, am I safe at the hodgden max?

I run 45 with 4064 with a 168 and I've been coveting my varget. I'd go at least that high with varget. A full case in 308 or 223 seems perfect and a lot of guys use drop tunes to pack in even more. Your gun may be different, but I'd test to prove it. I run 24.4 with 80s in 223 and it's compressed.

You’re going to have to define a few things here. What’s your bullet, goal, and purpose? Does your rifle’s barrel profile warrant any further testing? A thin hunting style barrel probably won’t get better groups with higher pressure; or, it might get better results until it heats up… not enough information.

I have a 1:11.25" twist Rock Creek barrel on a Savage 10FP and am using Sierra 175 Matchkings over 45.0 grains of Varget.
That’s probably the source of @conan32120 confusion:

I’m betting his online search results are not for factory, off the shelf rifles.

My point was that I'm shooting a heavier bullet and doing just fine at 45.0 grains of Varget. In his place, I would have no problem loading the lighter weight bullet to the max that Hodgden shows...factory barrel or aftermarket barrel. There is no way for the companies to know what barrel is being used. His 10 twist factory barrel should be fine.

My load data came from a Lee loading manual over 10 years ago. The current online loading data from Hodgdon says 45.0C is max load for the 175 and 46.0C for the 168 SMK, but the Barnes 168 TTSX is 45.0C. Gotta know which bullet he wants to load.

You could ladder until pressure signs, using 1 or 2 shots at .2 gr increments. Normally you can spot a stable node at the same time as noting the pressure increment then review/reshoot the node to determine at what increment it comes into tune and what increment it starts to go away.

I have a Savage Axis .308 that I worked up a very accurate load @ 44 grains of Varget pushing a Sierra 168 gr MK. Never seen any signs of pressure, and with a Witt muzzle brake, it's very comfortable to shoot.
Before that I was loading 42.8 gr of IMR 4064 with the same bullet with similar results. I just bought 4 lbs of Shooters World Precision Rifle that I'm going to be trying. I think these 3 powders are very similar in performance, so it will be interesting to see the results.
