I just bought a .17 HMR from my brother-n-law (to help out around Christmas). What is a good scope for this little gun? I'll be shooting tree rats and other small little critters.

For cheap, good scopes look at tasco and bushnell. They have certain scopes designated to rimfires, and are accurate and reliable in my experience.

I'm a big fan of fixed power scopes for tree-trats and other smaller critters. All my tree-rat guns have fixed 4 power tascos on 'em. They're inexpensive, and do a fine job. One of my tascos did break though after about 15 years of my abuse.

I go the other way, but I do a lot of paper punching, I like something with at least 16 power, to see the holes at 100 yds, I even have one with a 24 power, and another with a 32x, but for hunting purposes, you will find it rarely necessary to go over 6x. So a nice old weaver fixed power scope, or even a vintage 3/4 inch tube weaver, or lyman, or burris or redfield, would really fill the bill nicely. I would even say get an air rifle rated scope, they usually have a very short distance rating for being parralax free, and you really want this when hunting squirrels with a 17; because you want to go with headshots.
Otherwise, if you dont do a headshot, you will just blow them up, like a bomb, this applies to any game smaller than fox, if you hit it with a 17 , you simply rip it apart.

I've got 3-9 on mine as I do take the occassional woodchuck at 75 yards or so.

imho the reliable killing range of the 17hmr is about 150yds. The lowest power setting should be around 3 and the highest around 16. Any scope in the field is more then adequate for hunting, but if you want to shoot tiny groups on paper then go as high as you want. The mueller APV scope should be perfect for your hunting needs.

Cabela's has some of their Pine Ridge brand scopes that are really nice. I have a 3-12x40 that is ballistically matched to the 17 grain bullet on my H&R single shot and it will shoot dime size groups at 100 yards.

Buddy of mine had an air rifle scope he got at big 5. It seemed like a good scope when I first looked at it, but I was very sceptical after I realized it was designed for air rifles. He never had any problems with it, price was around $80 on sale. It seems to me that for .17 HMR, any low end scope with the magnification you want (I'd go anywhere from 3-9 for all around to upwards of 16x or higher for shooting mostly stationary targets like squirrels) with a brand you like, such as bushnell.

Link is to something I would consider

I have been shooting off sandbags and a portable bench from San Angelo. With a BSA Sweet 17 -12 power scope, I am getting many kills of P-Dogs at 220-260 yards measured with a Nikon RF.
