I must say I have heard lots of good things about the 17 HMR and had to see what the hype was about. I went out and got me a Marlin 917V and have been playing with it the last couple days. This thing is an absolute shooter!!! Dimes cover groups easy and quarters for really bad ones. To make things even better this is with a $30 tasco scope from walmart I had laying around lol... Are all rifles chambered for the 17 HMR this great? With this aside I was looking to hear some others experiences, so please share your love/hate for what I now believe to be the best rimfire caliber.

I wish you 17hmr lovers would quit posting this stuff. I can't afford a new rifle right now and it's driving me crazy.

But congrats on finding a good shooter. Over on rimfirecentral the 17 guys are all the time saying how much they love shooting small groups. Seems like the only thing that gives them trouble is wind.

Their take and what I've read elsewhere as well is that the success of the 17 is primarily due to the high quality control that goes into the ammunition. That and the fact that all of the rifle manufacturers have to compete against all the other tack drivers out there.

The marlin 917 and the savage 93 seem to be the top two rifles in the middle price range. Some folks prefer spending thousands on a rifle but can't post any better groups on target.

Again, congratulations.

I have owned or shot most 17s, including mach 2's, for 600 bucks or less out there; they were all moa capable out to 100 yds, very impressive. try 3 fixes on that marlin.
cut 1/2 to 1 coil off of the return trigger spring to lighten the pull.
really hog out the stock under the bbl, they really like to breathe freely.
go get a hard rubber drawer closer pad thingy , from Home despot, and put under the end of the bbl, at the end of the stock.
shoot 2 5 round groups, taking 1 minute between shots, then move the pad
back 1/2 inch, and reshoot. No need to move it back more than 2 inches
total.
the pad will either help you shrink groups even further, or it wont. Simple.
I use ones like this, but shave off about half the height, so the bbl doesn't sit so high.

I have the savage 93R17 BTV and I love, my brother has the one with the light colored one with the stainless and they both shoot dime size groups. Turns a black bird into dust like it has no other job:) the 17gr hollow points are the best as for expansion and group size.

Mine is a Savage 93R17BV pre accu-trigger. even without the enhanced trigger it is a shooter. It has taken praire dogs out to 225 yards and cotton tail and jack rabbits at past 150 yards. On small game the .17 hmr is one of the fastest killing rounds on the market. No twitch just dead and quick. Very happy with mine and would recommend one to anyone. I have taken a couple of coyottes with this rifle but required a follow up shot to finish the job. Favorite round is the 20 grain v-max that hornady puts out. Remmington also puts out a very good 20 grain ballistic tip can't remember what they call it off the top of my head.
Now if only Ruger made a .17 mach2 in the MarkIII pistol or Browning made one in a buckmark I would be in hog heaven.

I have the CZ452 Varmint and it is awesome! It is stock and definately sub-moa. Everyone who shoots that rifle is in awe. From the sounds of it, almost any rifle in .17HMR, but especially the CZ's, Savages, and Marlins are phenomenal.

Savage 93 17BTV ... all 5 from the mag on one quarter at 100 . Jusy kinda wedged in the target board after the first shot so I kept pluggin it

My 17HMR comes in the form of a Henry.....Yes I'm a sucker for Lever Actions
Now I'm not near the marksman as most folks on this board , but even I can get quarter sized groups from this round. With the help of a 3x9x40 and a steady table;)

My rifle seems to like the Federal and the Winchester rounds in the 17 gr the best even though the Henry web site claims their rifle was built around the Hornady round  Go figure:rolleyes:

Either way its hard not to like this little round . now if it were only available in cheap bulk packs;)

I had the 17 in a marlin from walmart that cost me 180 bucks. It was the most accurate small rifle I have ever owned. Don't ask a 22 mag owner they hate them since they don't have a 40 gr bullet. The whole 2650fps 17 gr bullet playes hell on ground squirels and tree birds and will turn a coyotes head into mush. I love it and so does the neice

Savage 93 here, with 20 grain hunting points I kill big hogs with it all the time, cheaper to use than a centerfire, thru the ear or even body shot, it makes mush out of their lungs and heart, there are some photos on .17hmr.com I think it is, one guy on there always post pics of hogs he takes.

I have the marlin 917v. I put it in a Boyds stock because I like the way it looks and topped it off with a BSA sweet 17. It easily shoots grains of corn at 100 yds.

The best thing about the .17 HMR is it's introduction reinvigorated the .22 magnum.

At the local Cabela's there are scores of 17s on the shelf but hardly any 22 mags, the reason being every time some 22 mag ammo shows up its gone in a couple of days while the 17s just sits there collecting dust.

What do you mean about the 22 mags? I do not see that here where I live... thats odd we have less 17 than 22 mag ammo here. Also the one thing I could complain about is the trigger on that marlin, it is a little stiff... I have been on here a while and am a gun nut but I do not know what bbl is could someone clairify the abbreviation for me?

typically bbl is bull barrel or a heavy barrel rifle. Around here .22mag has seemed to take a pretty heavy increase in price. Went from $7.00 a box of 50 to $15 a box. I still like the heck out of my .22 mag but it is no where near as accurate as my .17hmr.

Today my dad shot a groundhog in the head at 150 Yards with his Savage .22 WMR. (forget the model, but it is from the Model 340 days) Pretty damn good shot for a .22 WMR. I'd love to try a .17 HMR though, but the money tree seed I planted hasn't even sprouted yet.

HOrnady puts out a v-max in .22 WMR and I think its Federal puts out a NTX round in the .22wfr. Both seem to greatly increase the overall accuracy of the .22mag.

One issue with my 917V is the loose clip. I have a problem feeding 20gr bullets. I have to lift the clip up a little with my finger when I bolt in a new round. The 17 grain with ballistic tips work fine.

I shoot a Marlin 917VS. As a matter of fact I shot a .45" group at 100 yards yesterday using Hornady 17 gr. V-max ammo. I was playing with it while waiting for the barrel to cool between shots while doing some testing of different loads with my 22-250. It doesn't do so great with CCI 20 grainers though. 1 1/4" is the best it will do with them. Had a little side wind that didn't help matters but I did a fair job of reading it.

I've got a Marlin 917v, I love it. I replaced the factory trigger spring with one from a pen, and it's a lot better. I like the nonexistent recoil, pretty quiet report, and balance of the rifle. Sure the bullets may be a bit on the pricey side, but they're well-made varmint-type bullets (which a lot of times are more expensive than copper-coated lead bullets)

Since the day the 17HMR came to market I had been a sideliner; intently interested in the ballistics and reports I had heard. Everything seemed to be good, but I just couldn't pull the trigger.

Last week I came across a deal on a 917V, discovered the joys on the 17HMR, and promptly located a CZ452 American chambered in it. I'm now the happy owner of what I consider to be the ideal small game rifle.

Sure, I still shoot my 22LRs at the range where cheap volume wins out, but when I'm already taking a day off to spend a day in the field, the extra $5 I might spend on ammo is a very moot point...especially for the amazing accuracy and reach you get from a light and quiet rifle.

I bought mine Savage 2 years ago, and since I have only picked up the 22 to move it around the gun safe :) The only down side is I think its a little loud for suburban hunting IMO :)

Lot21; either take the mag catch inside the action, and bend the catch tab up a bit, or take your mag, and see if you can add a bit of jb weld to the top of the hole. These will ' lift' up the mag when it locks in.
