.17 HMR is what I assume you are talking about. It is the biggest of the three .17 rimfires.

I have one and love it! It is the first thing to take out of the safe for new shooters. It has a sleek look, no recoil, superb accuracy from even cheap rifles, and carries well to long range with good results on small animals. Also, new shooters (and old) love to shoot those cute looking little polymer-tipped pills.

I bet that the ammo costs would be really high for an Irish shooter, though. I don't mind paying $12 for 50 rounds, but I can get .22 for a little over a buck for fifty. I know prices are a good deal higher there. .17HM2 is about a third of the cost and about 400 fps slower, but is still a hoot to shoot and is very accurate besides. Also, you can shoot .17 Aguilia in a HM2, if you can find it there.

tl;dr, it's the only worthwhile cartridge to come out in the past several years, except maybe for the .204 Ruger. Those two cartridges introduced new bullet diameters and weights that shooters previously had to turn to wildcats or near-dead factory cartridges for.

I have a CZ 452 Varmint in .17HMR, love both the rifle and round. I’ve used it out to only 100 yards shooting targets but it’s been very accurate. .

Hello and welcome to THR. I love Dublin. Best tasting Guiness in the world, but the tap water tastes like S***. But hey, maybe that's why the Guiness tastes so good!

I don't own a .17 but have friends that do. They use them primarily for plinking and varmint hunting. Ou to 100 yards they are tack drivers and some folks even run them out to 150. I plan to get one for varmint hunting and use the 17 for shots up to 100 yards and my AR15 .223 for 100+ yards. The only drawback I've heard is that it gets windy, the light bullet can really drift.

My wife stole my .17HMR, but I still get to shoot it. I love it and it's a great little round. Will dispatch groundhogs with ease out to 120yds. Here's a pic of me shooting gatorade bottles at 100yds in a very strong crosswind.

They are good shooting and performing guns... but for my money I traded mine for a 22 long rifle.

The performance did not justify the ammo cost. But it was fun for splattering pigeons.

As I see it for plinking a .22 is the way to go the .17 HMR is a good primary critter getter as it is very accurate and has less drop (longer point blank range) but for target shooting I would stay with the .22 The .17 also has a tendency to put more energy into the target (fragment ect.) it has definatly has a niche

The 17HMR is very accurate at 100 yards and will regulary shatter shotgun clays laid out at 150 yards. The ammo it too expensive for what it does as 223 can be reloaded for about the same price, is accurate, longer rangeing by far and offers more bang for the same $$$.

I have a Henry lever in .17 HMR. Smoothest action out of the box I have ever felt. It is very accurate. My only problem is with bullet setback in the ballistic tip loads by Hornady. About Three out of 50 will not be crimped good enough to resist the almost negligent recoil.

.17 HMR I dig. The .17M2, not as impressed. Overall, I see no particular reason to buy one, as I already have a virtual battalion of .22's.

I have a NEF Sportster HMR that will shoot the Hornady 17 gr bt around an inch at 100 yds all day. But my feelings parallel aka108 in that it is too expensive to shoot. I can reload my 222 or 223 as cheaply and they are also accurate and are double the effective range of the HMR. So the seventeen just sits there.

I have the Marlin 917V with a cheapo Bushnell 3-9x 32 Scope. This thing is a terror for the Prairie Rats out to 150 yards at least. The biggest problem is ... my 10 year old son likes it so much that I hardly ever get to shoot it! Oh well, at least I have my Bushmaster Varminter...:D

Another 917V lover here. Added a Rifle-Basix trigger, and a Barska 9-20X.
When calm, 5 rounds easily fit in an inch circle at 200 yds, benched. Trick is to sense and adjust for the ever present wind. It's a nice repeatable flat shooter, but all a windage game with the tiny BB-size round.

have a heavy target barrel and a x24 scope on my contender in 17hmr ,golf balls at 100 yds and tin cans at 200 all day long , never shot in windy conditions with it so cant comment on that , an amazingly powerfull round for its size .
biggest drawback as already mentioned is cost .
so accurate that i know people who head shoot coyotes out to 200 yds with them, one shot kills .

read here for some stats; compared to 22 mag and 22 lr.

come here to read a bunch of dudes opinions about it...

I personally don't use it too much anymore, it is too expensive for ammo.
but then, it is an amazing little round still going 2000 fps at 100 yds, that is faster than a 22 mag at the muzzle. with a 100 yds zero, it only drops 3 inches at 150 , and 7 inches at 200.
however i prefer the 17mach2, to the 17hmr, and it is 1/3 the cost, with only a 50 yd loss in trajectory. Plus it will fire the 17Aguila round, which is a 20 grain fullmetaljacket boattail bullet, and is good for not blowing up your small game.
That being said, the 5mm remington mag is about to come back out, and that will make all other rimfire ammo and rifles obsolete, for hunting purposes that is.
Basically it has the same trajectory as the 17hmr, but in a 20 caliber bullet the weighs twice as much, so it has half the wind drift of the 17hmr, at 200 yds, but still very little drop.
go here to read abou the 5mm mag...

the new ammo is allready being made, and they also plan on a hotter round, a
32 or 35 grainer, doing 2500 fps, which is totally smokin hot!!!
That is like a downloaded 204 ruger round, which is typically doing 4000 fps.

thank you lads for all the answers,i hold a brno .22 rimfire rifle at the moment and it does the job i have it for,but was just interested in what the .17 could do or was it better than my .22,and on the subject of rifles, could i ask another question, what makes are best when buying a 250,i intend to get one as the .22 is not as good for them lamp shy foxes that we have over here, does anyone own them and what is the best shot they had,[how far]....as for the guinness in dublin its still as good but the liffey is still as green as ever,so anyone that comes to Ireland will see our beloved liffey flowing as green as ever,..thanks again for all your replys.....earthmover

Still an excellent varmint cartridge, but I'm not sure how you can confuse the two ;)

.22-250 is based on the old .250 Savage. It's a good .22 caliber varminter that falls in between the .223 Remington and .220 Swift. A lot of dedicated varminters make this their go-to cartridge.

It is, however, reloader territory. .22-250 is fairly expensive to shoot from the factory. If you don't reload, a .223 would probably be better for you.

Awesome. With my CZ 452 Varmint and Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20X50 scope, I can easily shoot 1 inch groups at 100 yards with just about any ammo. It has killed many groundhogs thus far.

22-250 is excellent at killing prarie dogs (think giant squirrel, size of a house cat) out to 500 yards; my longest shots were 425 yards with 55gr bullets. With heavier bullets, it is very capable of taking deer-sized game, which is where it surpasses the 220 swift.

What's this rifle going to be used for?

No .22 centerfire except the Swift can touch it.
Actually, there is an ackley improved cartridge in .22 that is viable out to 1000 yards; it was in either American Rifleman or Guns & Ammo.

thank you lads for all your replys,it was very interesting to hear all about the 22-250,where i shoot, a lot of foxes just stand outside shooting range of my brno .22 rimfire so a 22-250 or a swift would be the bees,s knee,s,,thanks again

I shoot .22-250 and some of my friends shoot .17! They are both great rounds however have you considered one gun in .223? It looks like it would satisfy your needs for both very well.....and inexpensively! Just a thought!

Good luck!;)
