Ive been wanting one so bad the last week its been hurting, So i borrowed enough cash to head to a gun show in Columbus,Ohio tomorrow at Westland mall if anyone else is reading and didn't know.

Of course i can buy at a local shop.
http://www.vanceoutdoors.com/flyer/flyer.pdf

Im looking mainly at the Savage MODEL 93BTVSS with thumb hole stock, It can be blued as i don't care about that. Black is always a good thing in a rifle imo.
Ill even settle for a normal stock in wood or synthetic also if its the right deal, But the deal breaker is i want a bull barrel regardless of what i buy.

I know the Savage has the accutrigger which is supposedly sweet. I can not comment anything about a Marlin in .17 as no shop around me carries them much. So if your a big Marlin fan and know some things you can tell me important about it pls inform me as an informed decision is always best.

The guns purpose will mainly be bench-rest target shooting and maybe some backwoods crow plinking. But 200 yard bulls is my goal.

Are either popular enough guns that thier is a decent after market for stocks so i can just buy a good gun with a no so good stock and change it later?

Any last ditch efforts to sway me to go with .22WMR? Isn't much difference in the two calibers i know of. Ive never shot either so this will be a learning experience.

No .22lr discussion pls,i own a rifle and pistol both in that caliber.
I have an excellent Nikon buckmaster 3-9x40 scope i can swap off my .22lr M&P15 and put a lesser one on that.

savage.. done! shot the other more popular 17hmr rifles made by others and i took the savage..

I inspected a few marlin .22lr bolt actions and even tho they were cheap in price the quality looked really rough. But again were talking a much higher grade rifle here tho.

The Savage seems alot more popular which can have many advantages in parts, accessories and resale. But i have nothing against Marlin, Matter of fact they have a couple in .17hmr and in pics i cant tell if it was a Savage or Marlin. Except looking for the accutrigger of course.

I can't say much about the Marlin, but my father-in-law has a Savage .17, and that thing is like a laser as long as its not windy. Every Savage I have shot has been super accurate.

Im getting ready to head out and hope for a good deal on a used one, Savage of course.
But worst case my local gun stores have the gun with thumb hole stock for $329 for blued and $379 for stainless. Both already with scopes which will help as ill swap my Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 too the .17 as my M&P 15-22 .22lr will get the lesser one.

If i remember ill post back what i come home with, As honestly i don't even know as i don't have my mind "set" on anything except it being made by Savage and it having a bull barrel.

Oh yeh, On a side note. They don't allow ccw permit holders to carry inside the gun show. Im REALLY displeased as this is being held in a pretty bad neighborhood and run down mall that needs torn down. Im seriously considering having an armed security gaurd walk me to my car, As they say on their website this:

LOADED GUNS, IN ANY FORM, HANDGUNS, RIFLES, SHOTGUNS, ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE SHOW AND THIS DOES INCLUDE PERSONAL PROTECTION WEAPONS. THIS DOES INCLUDE ANY AND ALL PERSONAL PROTECTION GUNS. A CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT DOES NOT EXEMPT ANYONE FROM THIS RULE. THE ONLY EXCEPTION TO THIS RULE IS OUR VERY ABLE PROFESSIONAL POLICE FORCE

If they are getting paid to guard us at the show im gonna get my money's worth as i go Nowhere without my 1911.

normally I will say savage here; though i am a Marlin whore. But I will add this; a lot of Savages like the 20 grainers better for accuracy- so you are taking a chance here, becuase the 17 grainers perform better, with better and faster trajectories. The marlins? I have them, have had them, in both mach 2 and hmr, and they have never , ever not been accurate, with anything, and have never let me, or anyone I have ever known in the history of the universe, ever let us down, in the reliability or accuracy dept.
So choose...

6 of one and half a dozen of the other. I think the barrels on the Marlin 17hmr rifles are a slight bit better than the Savage barrels, but the trigger on the Savage is much nicer making it mostly a wash. Either way wouldn't worry me much at all, if at all.

I just got home and the gun show was a waste of time. I seen 3 guns in .17hmr and only one was a Savage and it didnt have the accutrigger nor a thumb hole stock.
I thought i was gonna score from another guy who was there to sell what looked like my gun i want, But it was an oddball type of .22 and the maker was not anyone i heard of.

I then went to my favorite gun store i linked in the first post and checked all their stock out. Every combo they had included a scope, But the scopes were such crap i wouldn't even mount one on a pellet gun. BSA with a light and laser attached to the top and the other was a Tasco low end model.
Plus i didn't really want to pay the extra for Stainless steel as i like blued and dark rifles, They didn't have any blued ones in stock except the Target model with synthetic stock i didn't like at $439
So i bought 150 rounds of ammo before i left as i knew Dicks sporting goods only has over priced ammo. Here is a stock pic from Savage as im not feeling well and gonna lay down.
I then bought the 93R17 BTV with a Bushnell 3-9x40 scope for $329 +tax.

I never dry fired a Savage accutrigger as ive never shot one either, But my goodness is it sweet. I know ill be putting many rounds thew it before i ever do any trigger adjustments as it feels so good now i don't want to mess it up.
Yes i know not to dry fire a rimfire, But 3 times wont hurt anything as i had to let my parents try it out also.

On the ammo, I bought 2 box's of 17gr ballistic tips and 1 box of 20gr FMJ. But i wont be able to see any real results until it gets warmer in Ohio and the outdoor range opens up. But you can bet Monday ill be trying it out at the indoor range stuck at 75' along with my new Ruger 22/45 i just bought also.
