My wife is horrible at keeping secrets and hiding Christmas presents. ;) So I know that what's gonna be under the tree for me on Christmas day is a Savage 93R17-GV.

What can I expect from this rifle accuracy wise? Never owned a Savage before and wonder about the accutrigger it comes with? How about reliability? Quality of wood? I handled one at a local gunshop and noticed the trigger guard was plastic (not encouraging and part of the reason for this post).

How will the 93R17-GV compare to an equivalent Marlin or CZ-452 (both of which I own or have owned).

I guess what I'm asking is will I be happy with this rifle or will it become a safe queen?

I have this model and love it.
However I replaced the Simmons 3x9 that came with the rifle with a Nikon Prostaff 4x glass wtih excellent results.

I myself have a Marlin 925M (.22 magnum), but I hear rave reviews about the savages. Both Savage and Marlin are A LOT of gun for the money, and it should be VERY accurate. I think you will be very pleased with it.

Mine is a non-GV, whatever that is, and non-Accutrigger. It's a heavy barrelled, synthetic stocked version. Atrocious trigger required a Rifle Basix kit which pretty much ate up the good deal on the rifle. Other than that, it is what it is, and it shoots very well. Wal-Mart can order extra mags for you.

I love it!

I have this same gun, and out of the several guns I have, it is my favorite. My guns range from .17 to .45 cal and the 93R17-GV is my favorite and most versatile gun I own. If I'm out hunting squirrel and rabbit I can switch over and start coyote hunting anytime. I had concerns about the plastic trigger gaurd as well, but now I don't even notice it, and had forgotten it until I read this. About the wood it is not a show piece but nice enough to satisfy me. Besides I am betting that you are going to hunt with it, not hang it in a picture frame. I would say you're wife did you good.

Mine shoots excellently as well. It's a non-GV model with no accutrigger, and the trigger pull's quite heavy, but breaks clean. It shoots sub-minute with the hornady ammo as well. Great barrel.

accutrigger is adjustable down to about 1.5 lbs. bbls are made on machinery , it hink , according to Anschutz specs and tools, which is great, and it should be quite accurate.

Fantastic gun. You'll have lots of fun. I made a head shot on a ground squirrel at 147 yards with mine.

Well heck GUYS!

Now y'all got me wanting to sneak the thing out of the closet and make a range trip with it.

By the way what ammo should I get for it? I've searched around and CCI and Hornady seem to be the most popular but looking at Varmint Al's site it seems to me that the Winchester offering of .17HMR may be some really good stuff too. I'll mostly be punching holes in paper but if I can find a farmer within in 50 miles or so who wants some prarie dog extermination I'll be doin' that too.

Decent wood, bases are included, that one has the heavy, button rifled barrel. It will be a shooter. It may take a bit, but you will love the Accu Trigger, take some time and tune it to your preference.

Someone mentioned a scope, depends on if she got the 93R17-GVXP, 3-9x40.

Shoot the Federal premiums with V-max bullet. Same money as the CCI at Wal-Mart.

Mine is in a different stock, but it's the same gun...

It's capable of some pretty good shoot'n. I had it out last summer picking off clay pigeons over 200 yards away with every pull of the trigger. I decided, as others have mentioned, it deserved better glass than the POS Simmons it came with. I mounted a Leopold Rifleman on it, and have been very happy that I did.

Enjoy, and Merry Christmas :)

i shot some hornady 20 grain bullets out of my savage 93R17 GV and they didnt seem to shoot as well as the 17 grain has anyone had any luck with them?

everything I've seen with my gun and read on the forums is that EVERY gun is different and it seems that every gun will like just one brand/model of ammo. For my Savage it's 17gr CCI TNT ammo. I can put three rounds in a quarter at 100 yards with it.

federal premium v-shock 17 gr. here. My 93r loves it.

Also, another vote for favorite gun in the safe. Most accurate gun I own (cost me all of $229) and accuracy=fun, imo.

... One more thing; sometimes savages have a tendency to like the 20 grainers better, so make sure you try some of those out as well...

yes this is an old thread, but newbs will look at it.

i just bought mine $ 300.00 came with a cheap Bushnell scope. so cheap is the scope that i will have to read the paper work on it to find out what power it is.
i like the wood & the look of the Heavy barrel. havent really had much of a chance to shoot it yet. Fricken coldest longest winter EVER

I've searched around and CCI and Hornady seem to be the most popular but looking at Varmint Al's site it seems to me that the Winchester offering of .17HMR

CCI actually loads all .17's for the CCI, Federal, Hornady, and Remington brands.

My Savage 93 is great with 20 grain Hornady, I regularly take big hogs over #100 with it, behind the ear or even body shots, we got so many pigs here it is too expensive to shoot them with centerfire ammo, dont care, they will die soon enough and quit destroying my crops and fields. the internal damage the 20 grain does will amaze anyone. the dead hogs make good coyote bait too. mine has a Simmons Whitetail 6x18x50 on it and I aint shy about shooting over 150 yards at a pig.:D
