I just bought a new 1851 Navy - Uberti version. When I cock the hammer, there's the usual half-cock position, but then there seems to be a 3/4 cock position, between the half-cock and fully cocked position. Going from half-cock to full-cock feels like a 2 stage event, when it's done slowly. Is this normal?

my Pietta does the same thing as does my old ASM that Macmac fixed for me. First click frees the cylinder, second click is like half cock and the cylinder is locked again, third click is full cock.

Are ya'll absolutely positive that Wild Bill's ghost is not messing with those pieces?
Look at the grips real good. Turn them this way and that way under a good light. Are ya'll sure that ya'll don't see a faint outline of Wild Bill's face on one of them? Ya'll need to call the Old Fuff in on this one. This has all the earmark's of a deep and very profound mystery. I find the entire matter deeply disturbing and extremely distressing and I call for a full investigation to begin at once. I told ya'll and I told ya'll to let his spirit rest in peace. Now look what ya'll have done....

No mystery at all.

Two things happen when you pull the hammer back from half cock to full cock. Just before the hammer reaches full cock the bolt arm falls off the cam on the side of the hammer, allowing the bolt to spring back into the up and locked position (that's the first click, and the '3/4 cock' position you refer to). The second thing is the hammer reaching full cock and the sear on the end of the trigger engaging the full cock notch on the hammer.

I suggest you remove the trigger guard someday and sit under a strong light, cycle the action and just watch how, when and why things happen. You'll have a much greater appreciation for old Sam's design genius and the sounds that your gun makes will mean a whole lot more to you. And you'll be able to diagnose problems without even looking at the insides.

Mykeal i did that. then i took a polishing stone to some of the innards. That and some graphite cleaned up the action. Its amazing to think the whole gun only consist of 30 pieces. thats it 30

Actually I was speaking to the original poster, George757. He doesn't appear to have studied the action as yet. Sorry I wasn't more clear.

Wheww!!! I am so relieved. I could have sworn I opened my eyes about 0300hrs the other morning and saw Wes Hardin sitting in front of my computer reading about Wild Bill. I was simply scared to death that somehow they were going to meet up in my living room!!!....

Mykeal, I appreciate the "lesson". I like understanding how things work, and being new to BP revolvers, I'm scramblin' to get the ole light bulb to come on.
Thanks.

When I cock my 1858's, the same thing happens. It is absolutely normal. When the hammer is about to engage the full cock notch, the cylinder bolt clicks back into place and locks the cylinder for firing. That is what causes the click before the gun engages full cock.
