took a 1858 pietta to my first cowboy match. She fired 30 rounds no problems with no cleaning in between. accurate and easy to clean afterwards. used wonder wads and grease patch over the ball.

Welcome to the Remington fraternity. I have a pair of them, and they are quite reliable.

If yours starts shattering caps and hanging up on the fragments, try replacing the cones with Tresco replacement ones. (The factory cones will eventually open up after many repeated firings.)

Things only get better with age on the Remmies ...mine have been shot so much i just lube over 2 balls per cylinder now ...and can shoot all day .

I love my 1858 copy. I use it and a Ruger ROA for Cowboy Action. I make my own felt wads, lubed with Bore Butter. Tomorrow's match will find me using paper cartridges with lube over a few chambers.
The Treso nipples I put on right after I got it helped immensely with ignition.
Enjoy that piece, I hope you wear it out.

Remington No. 10 Caps they work great for me on my 58. I NEVER lube over the ball. I use a home made felt wad with beeswax/paraffine wax/mutton tallow (40/40/20) and it works fine.

If you'd rather not buy felt and punch wads, we sell them for $6/100 (as of 12/06) pre-lubed with a very similar mix to what Duncan uses.
