Opinions on Uberti 1858 New Model Navy (.36 cal)?

I have an ASM EMF Hartford 1858 NMA and it seems to be almost the same size as my Pietta EMF Hartford version. The Pietta has a longer sight groove although the frame itself seems to be the same size as the ASM. The ASM has a dovetailed front sight and a dovetailed loading lever latch post. The grip is the biggest difference with the Pietta's being both longer and much thicker. Does anyone have an ASM NMN who can tell us how it compares in size to the other replicas and to the original .36 caliber Remingtons?

Now there's a difference is size even I can see. Thanks for the photo. Now, does can anyone post a photo of a Uberti and a Pietta side by side ? And maybe even a original. That's probably asking for a bit too much. Man, that 36 sure looks nice.

The Remingtons above posted by LonesomePigeon (x3) belong to Magnus, one of several Swedish bros on 1858 Remington and other places.

Below are photos of the same guns from a different angle. Also Magnus' photos - Good stuff.

Good thread. I have read all of your comments and conversations. Well done!

I just have one gripe, and it is not the fault of anyone here on THR. Just a cranky old guy spouting off.

The originals that the Remington NMA/NMN were copied from by the Italian manufacturers had a patent date of 1858, therefore they were mis-labled as 1858 Remingtons.

The originals were not produced until late 1862 and were appropriately named the Model 1863.

It is way too late to change repro history but it kind of sticks in my craw. I do not own a repro Remington but have at least 6 Pietta 1851 Navy .36 type pistols which are very well produced insofar as fit and function, with one exception.

I noticed that the in the Pietta Remington pics that the wood is "proud" where it meets the frame, as are all of my Pietta 1851's. Why they cannot get the wood to fit better in just that area is beyond my comprehension when they use CNC machining for all of the metal parts.

Sorry to vent.

Jim

From what I recall the Remington 1858 NMA is supposed to have a large size frame and the NMN is supposed to have a medium size frame. I have no clue if any of the replicas made have different frame sizes and I would assume that Pietta uses the same exact everything for both except they bore it for .36 instead of .44. Am I wrong about this assumption? And, since you are asking for opinions I like the finish of the Uberti products a lot more than the Pietta products. First two pics are Uberti 1858 NMA....third pic is a stainless Pietta 1858 Sheriff's model. These are all .44 caliber.

I might be able to provide some perspective in a few days at least on the .44 cal original frame. Stay tuned.

You are correct in that assumption. Pietta's Remington .36 is the same gun as their .44 Rem except for barrel length and the bore & chamber diameter. Except for those three differences the specs on each are identical.

NMN in the middle has a 6.5" barrel. Top and bottom are .44 with 8" and 5.5" barrels respectively. All are Pietta.
