1873 Trapdoor Carbine

Howdy all I have been "assigned" to work on a trapdoor carbine by my father. This carbine had been painted over, the paint is mostly gone now due to the rust. The rust looked almost like paint or bluing, thats how thick it was. I could use some recomendations to remove it, most of it is gone due to elbow grease and a little usp bore paste in a slurry on a steel wool pad. There is almost no historic value to it as 80% of the finish is gone, so I plan on getting a book and pictures and rebluing it. I could also use a place to find a stock, a rear sight base and a firing pin. This gun will be checked out by a qualified gunsmith before firing is even dreamed about. Thanks a lot. Scott

I thought Dixie had a semi-finished repro stock for a lot less money. Order a copy of their catalog - some 700 pages for $5.00 and see. Besides the obvious the book has a lot of specific information on the Springfield 1873 rifles and carbines.

Bad news ....

I checked Dixie's latest catalog, and the $280.00 stock is the semi-finished one. Boy !!!!! Have prices jumped since I last looked.

My two-year-old Numrich/Gun Parts catalog didn't list a stock, but I have a new catalog on the way. They have added a line of replacement stocks and hopefully the Springfield 1873 is among them.

I would still order both catalogs (which I just did). Both are relatively inexpensive and they both have a lot of parts, accessories, and most important - background information on many different kinds of guns.

There are a number of companies that make replacement semi-finished stocks for all kinds of guns. I'll see if I can find you some more leads.

Jeez Old Fuff I owe you one! Thanks a lot and I'm still gonna order the catalogs as I have a feeling that my dad's hunting club will be giving me any rifles or shotguns that they can't get to work so i need the parts listings. I already got a Springfield model 87A that way, it had no safety.
