Hey Guys,

I was going to purchase a marlin 1895 cowboy with the 26” octagonal barrel in 45-70. I decided however it would be worth it to spend the extra money to have something I could be proud of, nostalgic, and beautiful. That would be the 1886 Winchester. The Winchester is about double the price, does anyone have experience with chiappa’s 1886? Does anyone know of another case hardened frame 1886 under $1400 they would recommend?

Had a Browning 1886 ages ago loved the rifle except for one thing, the curved steel butt plate was a killer with heavy 45/70 loads.

I am facing the same dilemma, posted about it in another thread. I tend to lean towards the Winchester they are strong and beautifully made guns, but pricey. Then there is that rebounding hammer. It really bothers me on my Winchester/Miroku 92 so I dont know. I dont know how much the tang safety contributes to the "not smooth action" but I am going to try the mod that gets rid of the rebounding hammer and see what that does for it before I decide which 45-70 to get.

I have a Browning 1886 SRC carbine and I love it.

I HAD a Browning 1886 SRC carbine and loved it. After all these years it is still the One Rifle I Regret Selling. Having said that, if I were looking for a new 1886 to replace it, I would have to get my hands on one of the Uberti or Pedersoli rifles to see if they were worthy; in lieu of that, I'd find another Browning. I think the safety features they worked into the current production Winchester 1886's are nonsense.

That's a win-win-win-win-win situation...
I think I’m going to run a Cody firearms record search em for this one. It’s got some surface rust that looks like it will clean off well. But it has a 20” octagonal barrel in 45-70. If I’m not mistaken the 20” may be special order since the “lightweight rifles” were all round barrel and 22”
