Intruders pay price for home invasion
Springfield woman shoots both, killing 1

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Colin Jenkins’ girlfriend was already in bed Tuesday night, and he was just about to join her when the doorbell started to ring incessantly. When Jenkins opened the door, a man forced his way inside the rural Springfield home. Within minutes, one robbery suspect was dead and another critically wounded.
Jenkins’ girlfriend had shot them both.

Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly called the late-night home invasion "an apparent horrible attack on innocent victims." He said that although the case will be presented to a grand jury, he expects no charges against the shooter, 19-year-old Megan Stapleton.

"There is no reason to believe this was anything but random, and this young couple was defending themselves," Kelly said. He said the couple has lived in the house since October. Stapleton is a waitress at two restaurants, and Jenkins, also 19, works in construction.

Killed was 29-year-old Jonathan L. Carson, a former basketball star at Springfield South High School who played the 1997-98 season with the University of Cincinnati Bearcats, averaging 3.1 points in 17 games.

Carson had run-ins with the law in recent years, Kelly said, and had a previous felony conviction for receiving stolen property. Wounded was Dow R. Huffman, a 23-year-old from West Liberty in Logan County. He was wanted for failing to appear in court on a previous charge. He was listed last night in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.

The drama began just after 10 p.m. when a neighbor spotted a suspicious car. There are only five houses on Darnell Drive, part of an upscale neighborhood north of the Upper Valley Mall in western Clark County. Georgianna Sarven and her husband have lived in one of them for 28 years.

Their neighbor went to their house and said she was afraid to go home because a strange car was parked on the street with its lights off and a man inside.

The Sarvens accompanied her to her home and were inside checking her house for trouble when they heard commotion across the road.

"Then, all hell broke loose," Mrs. Sarven said. "We saw the boy that lives there outside waving his arms, flagging down police, and someone else said there was a dead body on the porch."

Kelly recounts the night’s events like this:

Jenkins opened his door about 10:30 p.m., and Huffman, armed with two guns, muscled his way in. The two fought, and Jenkins yelled to his girlfriend for help.

She left her bedroom, and Huffman stalked her down the hallway toward a back room. When she emerged, she had a 9 mm handgun and Huffman was right in front of her. She fired multiple times, and he went down.

She then ran to the living room and found a masked Carson fighting with Jenkins on the floor. She fired several times, apparently grazing her boyfriend in the back and hitting Carson once in the back.

Carson got up, stumbled onto the front porch and fell dead. A handgun was found near his body. Jenkins was treated for his injuries at a local hospital, Kelly said. Stapleton was shaken but unharmed.

Kelly said the car that neighbors saw, a large green vehicle with a damaged door, likely was a getaway vehicle. He said deputies are searching for the driver.

i'm SO VERY glad the couple is ok.
those thugs got exactly what they deserved! well, except the one who survived:evil:

i'm proud to know ordinary folks just like us here at THR are fighting crime, and are winning!

BTW, did this happen in Florida? Will have a first test case for the new laws.

One of them is smart enough to keep loaded gun.
The other is foolish enough to open his door at night jut cuz some thug rings the doorbell.

I'd say he picked the right girlfriend.

I think this happened in Ohio.

If it had happened in FL I don't think this would be much of a test case because the shooting took place in their home not in a public which is what you new Stand Your Ground Law covers.

Good for her. However, she needs more range time. She left one alive and grazed her boyfriend.

Kinda proves out this quote though:

"Gun control: The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her panty hose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound." — L. Neil Smith

The family of the deceased has already been on television saying that this wasn't the John they knew yada yada yada. Apparently they hadn't stayed in very close touch with their relative and his actions/life style.

Rough for the couple, rougher for the crooks. F*** em, they deserved it. 9mm FTW.

Wow. Intense stuff. I can imagine the trauma Megan Stapleton is dealing with. Poor thing. But it's too bad she didn't kill both.

Anyway, score another one for 2nd Amendment, and let the Brady Bunch file this one away.

Guns save lives.

Why is that even in the story? Who wrote it, Al Bundy? :scrutiny:

Also (while I'm glad they were armed) don't you have to be 21 to possess a handgun? (or is that just to purchase a handgun from an FFL?)

In florida at least, it's only re: purchasing from an FFL. I was gifted a handgun before i turned 21. Apparently Montana laws state that you can possess a handgun @ age 14 :)

Anyone else notice this happened in a rural, and upscale neighborhood? I live in a small town in rural Nebraska and constantly hear "There's no crime here." This is evidence that invasions occur in places besides the inner city.

And Rev. DeadCorpse, at least she knew how to use the gun. As I've gotten more involved in firearms, it's remarkable (and unfortunate) how many wives and girlfriends do not know how to use their husband's or boyfriend's weapons.

Glad to hear the young couple is OK.

I'd rather things like this never happen at all.

However, if they do, I like to see them end this way. One BG on a slab, the other perforated and the couple unharmed (physically, at least).

strat81

strat81,
this is exactly why my Fiance goes shooting with me at least once a month. this leads to a one unfortunate fact: my beretta became her favorite gun, and so i can no longer call it MINE :D
on the other hand, it's also the gun we keep at home, loaded and easily accessible, so if need be (god forbid) she knows exactly where it is, and how to use it:evil:

Good for her. However, she needs more range time. She left one alive and grazed her boyfriend.

Stuff like that is why I love the internet. I'm sure that you've done much better in your many recent gunfights?

Plus it doesn't matter that she left one alive. The purpose is to defend yourself. You accomplish that with whatever means are neccesary. The goal isn't to kill the enemy, it is to stop them. Looks like success to me. Sometimes when you stop them, that has the side effect of killing them, but that is their problem for causing you to shoot them to begin with.

As for grazing her boyfriend, the boyfriend was wrestling an armed man. I'm sure that range time, slow fire bullseye, at a square piece of paper will be just the trick.

I'd totally take a bullet if it meant the guy who invaded my home with bad intentions towards my girlfriend and I was thoroughly perforated. Good job for her, IMO. I'd have been yelling SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT :p

This is why my wife knows how to use all my weapons and she has her own.

Good learning experience... do not open your door to anyone you don't know. :uhoh:

I hope they recover quickly from this absolutely terrifying ordeal.

But . . . It will make for good stories on their 50th wedding anniversary. Grandpa . . tell us about the time Grandma shot you again . . . Wow . . . Grandma's one tough old bird . . . Yes, Johnny, and you better listen to her when she tells you to put the video games away. ;)

I think they both performed exceedingly well under the circumstances. Good for them. I'm glad they are OK.

"The case will probably go to the Grand Jury"

If you haven't been to a grand jury they are unique. This is a wise move on the police's part and will be a blessing in disguise for the young couple. Monday morning quarterbacking the girls actions in the living room is laughable. The young Lady rose to the occasion IMO and should be commended. What a tramatic situation this had to of been.

Jim

I think this officially qualifies her for the Girlfriend of the Year contest...

+1

She deserves a pat on the back...but probably could also use a few prayers right now. I hope she gets a lot of support from her friends and family.

I hope every anti that loves to say semi autos are not useful reads this. In addition to all of those who like to deny the 2nd ammendment to those of under 21. I agree she could use some range time and maybe some training. Obviously this girl saved lives.
