Well I just got a new PT1911, and I want to get a bunch of mags to go with it. I'm seeing the Chip McCormick shooting star 8rd mags for $13 (with the base pad), and those are tempting. Any reason to not order those? Other recommendations (please no wilson's, not paying $30 per mag)?

Just stick with seven round mags.
They are usually more reliable, and cheaper. For eight round mags, Power Mags are pretty good, and Wilson's, but Tripp Research makes an 8-rounder that is fantastic, but in my opinion not for carry.

The Novac magazines are excellent, I have never had a problem from them and they are a beautiful blue with stainless followers, with plastic drop pads. Price is about $20 depending on where you buy them.

i just got a half dozen of the cmc shooting stars and they work great in my pt1911. i went to the range the other day and fired 500 rounds with not a single hicup. i also got them for 11 dollars and some change at www.topgunsuppy.com good luck. joe

ACT/Novak/Mec-Gar and Chip McCormick "shooting star" have all worked well for me in my many 1911s. Never saw the need to spend more than $5-15 for a 1911 magazine.

Check out CDNN: www.cdnsports.com If you can beat their prices on magazines you know you are getting a deal. They currently list the CMC blue 8-round "tactical" with basepad for $9.99 and the stainless version for $12.99, Novaks nickel are $16.99 -- look in the "Colt" magazine section.

I like Wilson's 47D's; they're expensive but they work well. I'm also a fan of Chip McCormick mags.

I'd feel comfortable with either in my CCW.

Take care,
DFW1911

chip mccormick, wilson, and the power mags are all fine. I have about 15 different ones 8-10 rounds. I carry them daily never a failure due to the mags. I keep the 7 rounders for the range.

Actually, edit. Not completely a failure, but the wilson's won't lock back the slide on my TRP for some reason, works just fine in my Colt. Just give them some range time before you carry them.

Chip McCormick 8-rd Power Mags. These function better than mags costing twice as much. (Wilson, Tripp, etc.)

Technology has improved enough over the past 100 years that you can now add one more round to a 7-rd mag without loss of reliability.

i love chip's mags and i have never had any issues with any of em. 7,8 or 10rd mags. i got a great deal on sa factory mags with my loaded coupon but i will definetly but some chip mc cormick mags in the future for this new 1911 of mine.

FLUKE?/ actual milage may vary

guess i'm the minority here....i have had group purchase chipmac's from a local dealer (i have included this info in the assumption they were made in at least nearly the same time frame), where some worked fine, and others from the same lot didn't. same-o for colt's, wilson's, kimber's, springfield etc. have had some that work well in one colt, or kimber, but NOT another colt/kimber????

-that to include 7,8 and ten round flavors.-

one of my long term projects is to try each mag in each platform, then sell those which have ANY failures, in ANY iron. judging by last gun show, even used they will fetch new prices for those willing to shop around for better deals online or in catalogs.

I've used CMC mags and noted that when the last round is chambered, the split follower has a tendancy to dive into the feed ramp. If using an aluminum frame, it can get scratched or even gouged.

I still have several of the CMCs, but now I primarily use Wilson with the plastic 1-piece follower.

No one's mentioned Mec-Gar mags. I used them for several years until I got a 1911 with a mag funnel. The wide base plates of the Mec-Gar wouldn't fit well enough to seat the mag. They're good mags though.

Eight rd 1911 mags got a bad rep when a few were problematic when they were first offered. Haven't heard or seen of any 8rd specific problems for 20 yrs. I have not had any more problems with McCormic or MeGar than the Wilsons. I like the removable base plates of the McCormic Power Mags better than the Shooting Stars, but they both work fine. A good rule of thumb is: stay away from Pro Mags. Everything else seems to work fine.

8 Rounders

I have never had any kind of problem with a Wilson Combat mag. I have 15 or so of them that I use in IDPA shooting. That said, I have picked up some Chip McCormick Extra Power 8 rounders. Quality product, large numbered witness holes, extra base pads of different thicknesses, and about $10 cheaper per mag than a W/C. If I was buying now, I would go Chip McCormick.
I tried Mec-Gar, bad idea. The base pad was so wide it hit the sides of my mag funnel and the mag would not lock in place. Without a funnel I'm sure it would be fine though.
The S.S. 7 rounders that came with a Springfield TRP would not lock the slide back on any of my 1911's except 50% of the time. I bought 10 extra blue 7 rounders from Springfield (using the loaded coupon that came with the gun), same result as the S.S. ones. Now I just use the 7 rounders as a storage device for odd ball and left over ammo.

Wilson 47D's work great in my PT1911 and are the only ones I use in my Kimber Pro Carry II. Never ever had a problem and they are guaranteed for life.:D

I have 5 chip shooting stars, and they all work very well.

But I'd rather have the powermags after seeing the higher quality on them.

Springfield mags (at least the ones that came with my $1500 TRP) are made in mexico by Metalform. I have no idea why they thought it was acceptable to include such inferior mags with a high-end hand-fit pistol.

I use 8rd Wilsons now and am very please with their performance.

Higher quality mags? Seems to me either they feed 100% and lock back on the last shot or they don't. Mags seem to me to be rather binary in quality either they work or they don't, and price has a somewhat poor correlation to the "quality".

I've a motley assortment of 1911 mags -- enough to load 500 rounds and head to the range. Can't say I've shot every mag in every 1911 I own but if a mag fails, I set it aside and try it in some other guns. IF it fails again, I junk it if a quick spring replacement (keep spares in my range bag) doesn't cure the issue. If it only fails in one gun I try to figure out what might be wrong with that gun.

I've not discarded many mags over the years including a few that cracked, I look for cracks now, since my oldest Colt mag let loose and dumped rounds all over the ground. Since that event I check the bottoms before I load them and junk any that have cracked. Again its a rare event.

Another satisfied Chip McCormick fan. I have officer sized 7 rounders (Kimber Compact) and full-sized 8 and 10 rounders (Springfield GI).

I have a couple Mec-Gar (officer's 6 rounders), they are also great performers. One was factory.
