Are 9mm extractors typically harder to remove than .45?

To get mine out, I actually have to pry the hook back so it will go into the extractor tunnel. Makes fine tuning an extractor a pain, and I'll go through it again when I fit a spare...

I'm used to my 45s sliding out with only a little resistance. I fitted/tuned spares (or replacements) for all of them and never had this issue.

The pistol is a dressed up Armscor, I mean a 9mm STI Spartan... I don't think the "send it back" approach will work out well. I probably voided the warranty when I properly blended the grip safety, smoothed out the sharp edges, installed a Dawson light rail, flat-topped the slide, removed the "SPARTAN" billboard, and had the front dovetail recut...

Thanks in advance,
Zach

Just press it out and away from the breech face and it'll pull right out.

To expand on what Joe said, take a look at the hook end of your extractor. The fitting pad right behind the hook is cut down significantly on the smaller than 45 ACP extractors to allow the hook to move closer to the center of the slide. That leaves the hook standing proud of the rest of the extractor. Compare that to a 45 extractor. You will see the difference. Brownells sell a tool to make it easier to remove. It is a steel rod with a knurled portion in the middle for grip and a long ~1/8" diameter shaft with a slight angle near the tip to help you move the hook over to clear the edge of the hole. Nice to have, but not absolutely necessary.

Thanks guys.

I noticed the fitting pad was a lot smaller than the .45, I assumed due to the smaller bore, so the additional effort to remove it made sense. But thought I would ask and make sure since I haven't seen anything specific to small bore extractors, and dont have another 9mm 1911 to use for reference.

The 10-8 armorers tool works great for prying the hook away from the breechface (bringing total number of uses so far to 2), but I didn't have it with me at the range that day... I might find more uses for it if I'd grab it before I reinstall the thumb safety...
