Any thoughts on the Remington R1? Found one locally NIB for $550.

Oddly, they also had a Kimber two tone for $650.

I would lean toward the R1 to be honest.

I don't have any experience with the Remingtons and I avoid Kimbers, seen plenty of friends have issues with theirs.

Check gunbroker, I was just looking and there are Springfield Gis and Mil-specs in the $500 - $650 range, new and used, and ORM Colt 1991A1s $600ish.
This is a brand new Springfield Mil-spec for $600 - http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=554244078 - I've dealt with them before, good folks.
This one is used but looks practically new for $499 - http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=554247020

No reason to buy foreign and off-brand guns when you can get quality names for those prices.

Yea, I am not a fan of Kimbers either.

I have been cruising Gun Broker. Thanks for the links.

Maybe someone has some experience with the R1 and can wade in. The reports/reviews I am reading look pretty good.

uh, STI frame or Caspian. If you're going to strip it and build it back, might as well start with quality.

If I was doing the project, I'd probably grab one of the 2011-pattern frames (hi-cap) and build a race gun with a long-slide.

Tuj - that was already discussed and discarded. I am not looking for a race gun or building from a frame.

So I decided to go with the Remington 1911 R1. All in all I think this will make a good starting point and from all the reviews I have read it seems to be a solid gun.

So now begins the joy of considering what all I want to do to this gun. Much like the motorcycle analogy I began with, planning the build is half the fun. I have done some light work on previous 1911's I have owned, but that was mostly cosmetic. This one will be getting more performance upgrades and cosmetic.

I will keep you posted on my progress. Probably start a new thread when I actually begin to get a plan together.
