1911 for around $800, thinking about Taurus

So my friend wants to get himself a full size 1911. He is looking into Taurus and has a spending range of around 800. I think he can get better for his money. Any suggestions?
 
Colt XSE/WWII repro, Springfield "Loaded" model, Smith and Wesson, used Dan Wesson CBOB/Pointman, etc.

The list is endless.....

I'm not a fan of Taurus at all to be honest with you, especially if you have 8 bills to play with.
 
Yeah, a Colt 1991A1. I would never even consider buying a Taurus over a Colt. Does your friend also prefer Cobalts over Corvettes?? :confused:
 
Heck, if you take "about $800" to encompass prices modestly above $800, you could get a NEW Dan Wesson, or even an STI Trojan.

The STI Spartan might be something he'd want to look at. Someone on GunsAmerica or wherever (I forget who) sells Dan Wessons with indiscernable cosmetic flaws for something like $750.
 
Springfield or Para. Even a Colt (not that 1991 junk), but a nice Series 70 or 80 can be had for $800.
 
Well I just picked up the Taurus PT911 after researching and reading thousands of threads-
I paid a little under $500 for the package and am satisfied with what I recieved.

The PT1911 has functioned perfectly. After 6 boxes of ammo-no a single problem. Plus I have the extra cash to buy more ammo. :D

Its my workhorse, for its purpose its what I need.

You obviously don't own one. Do a search on here for posts about the Taurus 1911 and you'll find a lot more positive things said about it than negative.

I own one and I can't be more pleased with it. I have the blued version and the only thing I don't care for it is the poor finish. As far as reliability and accuracy, I'd put it up against a Springfield any day. For a first gun in the 1911 style, I'd say it should be very close to the top of the list. If you've already got other 1911s then I'd pass on it. But I absolutely love mine and I bought a set of custom grips and took the cheap black plastic ones off. It makes it look like a high end pistol.

But if you're looking for something around $800 then Taurus probably isn't your best option. With Taurus, you can get a blued model for around $450 and a stainless for close to $600. But for $800 you can get into some Kimbers or Colt Gold Cups used.
 
You should be able to find a kimber in that price range. A sprinfield should run about 500 and you got 300 left to trick it out.
 
800 for a 1911? You have many many choices. Particular among them the RIA, Springfield Mil-Spec, Colt, some Kimbers, and even STI.

I wouldn't even consider the Taurus in this purchsing option. If your budget were 500, it's worth considering and then re-considering because it's a Taurus.

Last time I looked, my 1991 had "series 80" stamped on it. Nor has it been anywhere remotely near "junk".
 
When I was shopping for a Springfield Loaded Stainless I ended up with a Kimber II stainless for less money. Adjustable sights were the only thing I felt I gave up and the thing is dead on so that didn't matter.
Anyways, I got it for less than 8 bills about a year ago.

I'd come a lot closer to considering a Taurus than I would a Rock Island like you suggested. RIA are cheaper than the Taurus and you can tell by looking, you don't even have to pick one up first. At least with the Taurus, you get a lot of the higher end options. As I've said, the finish on my Taurus isn't anything to brag about, but it was showing some white dots on in the finish that would not come out. I called Taurus and they paid for all the shipping and either reblued or put a whole new slide on my gun. Their customer service was just fine in my opinion. But the finish I've seen on the RIA reminds me of a bad parkerizing.

But the main theme that everyone has been saying is that if you're looking to spend $800, set your sights a little higher than a Taurus. Kimbers are beautiful guns as well as some of the higher end Springfields. I'd also consider some of the Para-Ordinance ones. I don't know if you want the full size 1911, but I absolutely love the little Springfield EMP.
 
I am a relative 1911 newbie but I thought Para's were scoffed at for poor quality?
 
Para's quality is up there. I believe the issues were with their "north of the border " customer service. Either way, they make some gorgeous guns.
 
Ok so I think he's pretty much settled on a Springfield Armory "loaded" model. Is it possible to get it with Novak sights? Or does it come with dove-tail sights that are adjustable?
 
Without being prejudiced by the rest of the answers
to your question, my first response is

WIth an $800 Budget why on earth consider a Taurus?

I bought a S&W 1911 5" Bbl. stainless steel
it has Novak low mount carry three dot sights,
and the company has one of the best ratings in terms
of customer service

Springfield Armory loaded or a Mil SPec with accessories
offer more quality and customer service as well.

I'll go read the thread now.

heck you could get a Colt of various flavors with
that budget
