Wife has given me $800 to a grand for a new pistol. I want a 1911 in .45. What the best one from 500 to 800 and 800 to 1000? I could probly push for more or just spend more and make her mad its my money anyways but i digress. So What should I get? The Px has RIA kimbers Taurus and like 4 other 1911s And can order many more tax shipping and transfer free. I want to keep it closer to the 500 mark so i can have some put away for other opportunities that may open to me.

Under $800 Look at the RIA Tactical under $500 OTD

For $700 or less you can buy a STI Sparten...

Frame...Government Length, Standard Width, Steel, Checkered Mainspring Housing And Magazine Release
Grips...Hand Checkered Double Diamond Wooden Grip Panels, Philippine Mahogany
Slide...Five Inch (Government) Overall Length Steel Barstock
Slide Features Traditional 1911 Styling STI Serrations
Trigger...STI Patented Black Polymer
Barrel...5.0" Bushing Barrel with Fitted Bushing
Hammer...STI Square Style
Safeties...STI Single Sided Extended Thumb Safety STI High-Rise beavertail grip safety
Guide Rod...One Piece Full Length
Sights...Adjustable Rear, Fiber Optic Front
Overall Length...8.5"
Weight...35.3 oz.

Competition Approvals...IDPA, USPSA

Then you would have plenty of money to stock up on Mec Gar magazines and ammo!

For about $1000 you could get a S&W "Enhanced Series" 1911. They're being shown to the public at this week's SHOT show and information should be posted to their website this week or next week.

wow, lots of choices. i think rellascout just about gave you the best rundown anyone could give you. i have to cast a vote for a springfield loaded model.

Thanks for the complement brandon_mcg. Springer loaded would fall somewhere in there too. Between the STI and the Colt. My only issue with the production line springers is that sometimes they are dimensional a little off but for the most part that does not effect function.

Loaded Runs about $750 + shipping & transfer

As others have pointed out the The New Springfield Range officer is worth a look. It looks promising but I have note seen one in person so I did not add it to the list.

Range officer $750 + shipping & transfer

Stock 80 series Colt would also fit which would be about $700 to $800 depending who you know. :)

No one else has mentioned it, so I will.

I have carried my Para-Ordinance P14 for about 10 years now, and I love it. Fantastic weapon. I would look at those before I decide.

I have owned Colt 1911 in the past - and I'm sorry I no longer have it.

I have always wanted a Kimber myself, but never had one.

I have an RIA tac, Kimber Custom II, and Colt Commander. They're all in your price range and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of them. If money is a primary concern, the bang for the buck of the RIA is hard to beat.

I have a Springfield Loaded. I can say nothing but good about it. It feeds any style/weight ammo and shoots nice tight groups.

Chad,
Due to the amazing similarity in our circumstances. I always get a new coupon from the Pistol clerk using the trademark (Or at least I thought so) quote, "Should a rare opportunity present itself" ;) and have been "Budgeted"a similar $$$$$$ amount by my Honey Bunny I am seriously considering the STI Spartan......Looks like a high end pistol at a reasonable price:cool:
I already have a Taurus PT1911 Duotone which is an extension of the personna and got the looks too

I suggest you spend all or most of the money available to you on a major name brand 1911 of your choice. Think about how you will be using the gun and explore all the options each brand and model offers and find the one that best fills your needs. You will be happier with the weapon and will have something that you will be proud of and won't be thinking six months down the road that "I wish that I had". If the wife will be shooting the weapon, you might want to get her involved in the selection process.

Wifes selection process normally comes down to ooh pretty the caliber. With that said the ohh pretty comes after trying trigger action and playing with saftys and slides. ( Id like to think Ive trained her decently well) Its just that this one i want to be mine. Not ours Also i think I just got okayed for 1200 whit means I could prolly swing 2. That would be a good day.

Here's what I ordered last week: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/71978. Reading posts on various forums I've learned (I think) two things about 1911s, S&W and DW owners are nearly all happy with their choices and trouble free. All other brands seem to have nearly as many detractors as fans.

If I had the money, I'd buy them all. My collection starts with domestic however and will likely continue that course for the first 3 or 4.

S&W seem to run well but I have never been a fan of the external extractor. Looks like a nice deal.... When are they supposed to be shipping. They have not even put the "enhanced" series on their site yet. I heard one of the new Enhanced models will be a bobtail.

I have three Kimbers that work perfectly that I bought for between $800 to $1300. However if I had a $1200 budget and decided to purchase two handguns. I think I would go with the Springfield 1911 GI in .45 which seems to have good write ups and the fact that I've never had a Springfield. I would use the rest to get a nice revolver to go along with it to have something different. Maybe a Ruger 4" GP100 .357 or SP101 .357 depending on whether I decided on a range gun or CCW. One of the 9MM plastic wonders would be a good alternative for the revolver which would allow for cheaper shooting. For me, this would be a Glock 19, but not knocking the Springfield XD or S&W M&P.

It appears that you are in the Military. Thank you for your service. I was in an Armored Calvary unit in Vietnam. Good luck with your selection and "Good Shooting".

The Bobtail is a bit pricier: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/71999.

I'm not sure when they ship, SHOT is the official launch but I placed my order last week and I'm hoping I'll have it in hand before March but who knows. As for S&W's website it gets fewer updates than Oprah's love life.

I can understand anyone who cringes at the thought of an external extractor on a 1911 but Smith really copied their homework High Power on this one and the ES runs the oversized Performance Center version.

Those STIs sure do look tempting, as does that Colt...

If you want the most for your money take a look at the Para GI Expert. $499 retail and it has a lot going for it. The only thing I am going to change is to a beaver tail grip safety and the grips. Trigger and the rest is awesome.
