Anybody make a 1911 type frame but without a grip safety? Just a solid frame or maybe just a mainspring housing that extended all the way up.

I think that would make a nice variation.

Yeah, that would be a problem. There would have to be some other changes as well for a solid frame.

Could be an interesting gun if you could do it somehow.

The old Arminex Trifire had a one-piece backstrap that included the mainspring housing and a filler for the grip safety area. It would fit a 1911.
Rescomp made a similar piece for a while but I have not been able to get one from them.

If you made a 1911 frame without a place for a grip safety you would have a Ballester Molina or a Star Model P, pretty much.

The Ballester Molina and Star Model P, are they the same as 1911 in all other respects?

For those who, like me, don't care for the grip safety on the 1911, it is easy enough to pin the safety and render it inoperable. I have done that to several of my 1911's that I use for competition. Not usually done on guns used for self defense.

"The Ballester Molina and Star Model P, are they the same as 1911 in all other respects?"

No, but they are as close as you are going to get with a solid backstrap on an actual gun, not a design exercise.

Supposedly the Ballester was intended to take 1911 barrels and magazines so they could use spares from Systema production, but I have read that they are not fully interchangeable.

The grip safety can be blocked without drilling holes etc. Just insert a piece that can be removed whenever necessary. I anyone wants the dimensions let me know.

All that would need to be done is to take the existing grip safety, modify it without the "arm" that blocks the trigger bow and have it "fit (mate)" into the mainspring housing so it doesn't pivot. Same access and takedown as the traditional.

I'm sure there would be a better redesign, but that would take some thought and innovation on the 1911 manufacturers...need I say more. :D

Perfect modification on a series 80 since you have a firing pin block activated by the trigger and the grip safety serves no useful function anyway.

Can't do it on a Kimber or S&W because they foolishly use a grip activated firing pin block.

The smaller companies that actually produce non traditional 1911's like STI, SVI won't do it, I suspect, since they don't have a firing pin block in their models and no one is going to remove an existing "safety", useless or not, in this country. Besides, they know that a lot of people pin the grip safety anyway, so why assume the liability.

Even Para, with the LDA, a double action with a thumb safety  , still incorporated a "grip" safety.

So, I think it's a lost cause. ;)

Mete: I would be interested in that dimension or part as long as it's not a shock buff that's cut to fit.

45auto, The first one I made was from a piece of plastic then I decided to do it right and used titanium. Dimensions - 1/2 x7/32 ", thickness 5/64 or 3/32".It then has to be cut to make room for the hammer strut -cut out a half circle of 5/32" radius.. This has been in my gun for years.

I will have to get a look at the Ballister and Star; although I didn't care for the Star pistols that I saw in general.
The backstraps would be a good idea. But now that I think about it, the frame would still have a broken surface as it does with the safety.

What I am trying to invision is a 1911 with an unboken surface on the back of the grip frame (like most other guns). I have never had problems with the grip safeties, and I don't even notice them when shooting. This is purely for looks. It was in fact the series 80 firing pin block, as 45auto mentioned, that got me thinking about it.
