I am looking at putting a 1911 together. Right now I am looking at the first piece, the frame. Currently, I am looking at a full size (5") Caspian frame. Before I chunk the money down, I was wondering if Caspian is the best choice or is there another one that I missed. So, what is your opinion on who makes the best 1911 frame on the market.

If I were building, I would get a Caspian slide and frame combo (they've already done the fitting, IOW). If I were having it built, I'd go Caspian frame, STI slide.

I did a build on a Remsport frame. Top quality. Also had them fit the slide and rough bobtail it. Would use them again in a heartbeat.

A Caspian frame will do you just fine. Most of my GI builds are done on Essex cast frames and they are holding up just fine. You are more likely to wear out a half dozen slides before you gotta worry about the Caspian lower.

I built one on a Caspian frame and slide. It worked out very well. I got it cut for a ramped barrel, Bomar sights, checkered front strap. I built it up and then sent it to Novak for installation of a Kart barrel. It is loose enough that it will shoot all day and not get clogged with fouling, but tight enough to shoot very accurately. I got to build it up exactly the way I wanted it without having to take someone else’s idea of a configuration, then change out parts to get the way I wanted.

Caspian/Foster Industries, Remsport, STI, Wilson, Baer. it's your choice on what you want to use. just find the one that fits the requirements for your build.

If Caspian is not the best it's very close. And if you find one better, it might just be a Caspian too.:D

What's the best (and by best I mean cheapest) source for the cheapest frame out there? I decided I need dedicated hosts for a .22 conversion or two. Cast doesn't worry me; I don't imagine .22 uppers will stress them much.

RIA and sell the top end.

Not a bad idea, actually. But I have a hard time parting out functional pistols. I'd rather get a complete lower but nobody sells them, do they?

Haven't seen one, and if you are looking for cheap, it'll probably more.expensive than the RIA route.
