I have a Springfield GI 1911 45 that exhibits jamming with some mags, but works 100% with others. The problem is that the last round will feed and the gun will fire when the trigger is pulled, but instead of proper ejection the base of the cartridge case is jammed into the mag feed lips and the front of the cartridge case is jammed against the front of the ejection port. In this condition the mag cannot be released. The slide is almost always locked back. The only way to clear this is to use a screw driver or needle nosed pliers to pry out the case.

Is this strictly a mag problem or a combination mag/extractor problem?

It may or may not be the magazine's fault. I would also check out your extractor too. It may not be tensioned properly or it may be clocking against the firing pin stop. My 1911 recently was doing the same thing and it was caused by these two issues. Because the last round ejected didn't have another round to assist with ejection the weak/clocking extractor let go of the case too soon and caused the type of jamb you describe. I replaced the extractor and the firing pin stop and the problem went away. FWIW.

Since the problem occurs with some of the mag brands mentioned I think those that suggest extractor problems are probably correct. Tuner, do you suggest a new extractor or tweeking?

Ron, it depends on exacly what's going on. Most of the time, when the extractor drops the last round only, it's clocking...rotating in the channel. Sometimes adding a little tension does the trick. Other times, you may need to install an oversized firing pin stop, fitted to butt against the bottom of the extractor's slot to hold it square. I like to fit the stop regardless. Keeping the extractor stable is conducive to more consistent ejection.

Still other times, you may need to replace it.

Sometimes...all of the above. Start with bending it slightly for more tension and see how it flies.

Thanks Tuner and just for the record, since I didn't mention it in my OP, the gun is new and has 650 rounds through it.
