Help me please! This kimber eclipse pro 2 was bought used, but in like new condition. The first 400 rounds or so was a feast of every type of jam known to man. Kimber says the gun needs 500 rounds to break in. It is getting better, but with about 800 rounds thru it I am still having a 5 percent failure rate. About one or two percent nose down feed jams, but the bulk of the jams are premature cartridge release from the mag, resulting in a round in the chamber and the extractor not clipped over it, so the slide is not in battery. I have tried four new wilson mags, the kimber mag, and a mccormick mag, none work. This is allways occuring on the last round. I read 1911 tuners article on the mag basics and none of the mags have the little "dimple" on the floor plate that apparently is there to slow the release of the last round. I guess next I try a GI mag? Also, what about a weak reciol spring- could this be allowing the slide to hit the end of it's travel hard enough to pop a round free from the mag? Kimber does reccommend replacing the spring at about 800 rounds. Thanks for any and all help,Folks.

Have you tested the tension of the extractor? And also make sure that the bottom of the extractor claw is smooth. There is VERY good info on www.m1991.org on what to do to check the extractor and what to look for in the extractor claw. The round must be able to ride up under the exctractor.

Don't fool with it. Just make Kimber fix it under warranty.

That's what people who own EVERY OTHER BRAND OF GUN ON EARTH DO when it doesn't work. But for some reason, people get broken 1911s from the factory, and decide to try to do it themselves. And do-it-yourselfing is the main way 1911s get broken!

I change a recoil spring every 2000 rounds on my Kimber. I had the same issue with my Custom II once I changed the recoil spring it ran fine.

If you bought the gun used in like new condition I would expect it broken in.

The first thing to try is a new mag.

My Kimber mags work better than Springfield. But Wilson Combat or MecGar mags are far better and usually solve almost every feed problem.

Spend 25 or 30 bucks on a good mag before you mess with anything else.

It's a magazine problem. Kimber...Springfield...McCormick...and most Colts are all made by Metalform...and most have weak springs. If you're within driving distance of Lexington NC, bring the gun to me and we'll stick a good magazine in it. If you're not, call Metalform and order a stainless, 7-round mag with the Wolff spring upgrade.

Betcha that cures what ails it.

Why?

Because he already said:

I have tried four new wilson mags, the kimber mag, and a mccormick mag, none work.

A Wolff spring in the Kimber mag would probably work..IF...it's a standard 7-round mag. Part of the problem's with the spring. The other part is with the followers.

I concur with the assessment it is a magazine problem, or possibly a weak recoil spring- (one reason I think it could be related to a weak recoil spring is I am also having nose down FTF, and with a little hand pressure on the back of the slide, , the round pops up the ramp into the chamberas if the side was returning hard enough.

I tried the wilson 8 round mags, did'nt work. Sent them back for inspection by wilson and requested 7 rd mags in return- with new springs. Different follower design. They did'nt work either. Kimber and mccormick- no go-these are all NEW mags.
I Suspect the magazine follower is at fault for the following (pun intended) reason- problem only shows up on the last round-if it was a extractor problem I would suspect it would show up intermittantly at various times? None of these mags have the military "dimple" on the follower.
1911 tuner, thanks for the offer- it would be a LONG trip to visit!

Is this an external extractor model? Last round sure points to the magazine but I'd make sure the extractor spring is clean.

All stock factory 1911 mags suck. Sorry, but this is true.

Buy a Wilson magazine and shoot happy.

You said the gun was bought used, have you replaced the recoil spring yet? Kimber recommends that the recoil spring be replaced every 800 rds on the models with a 4 inc barrel (Pro and Compact). Try changing that spring and see what the results are. Wolff 22lb officers spring for full length guide rod, or the new one designed for the 4" Kimbers.

Whoops! If the gun takes a short mag...Officer's Model length...order a standard 6-round Metalform. If it takes a standard-length magazine, order the 7-rounder. Only stainless mags are available from Metalform with the Wolff springs. If you want blued mags, you'll have to order the springs from
Brownells and install'em yourself.

Eclipse Pro 2 is a 4" gun that takes regular length mags; so the 7 round Metalforms ought to do the trick.
